Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes, thick octavo. 1650pp. VG copies in G-Nr VG sl spotted dustjackets. From 1916, when Justice Holmes was 75 and Harold Laski 23, until 1935, these two highly articulate but quite dissimilar men carried on a steady correspondence. While there is much chat and gossip, especially on Laski's part, the correspondence illuminates not only the personalities of the writers but much of the intellectual climate of the years between the First World War and the New Deal. These letters, first and foremost a delight for the lover of good reading, are also invaluable for the lawyer, the historian, the politician, and the political scientist. Extra postage will be required for overseas orders.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volume collection of the nearly 20-year correspondence between two prominent and influential men of the first half of the 20th century. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Is well-known in the U.S. and UK. Harold Laski, British economist and politician, who turned to Marxism to explain the Great Depression, less so some 20 years into the 21st. As Justice Felix Frankfurter notes in his foreword to this two-volume set, "Holmes and Laski were obviously men apart. Much about them was calculated to keep them apart also from one another. But the factors of divergence --antecedents, age, preoccupation, geography -- were absorbed by their feeling for one another and by the intensity and range of their intellectual interests." First edition. Both books about 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches bound in tan cloth-covered boards with black backstrips and gold lettering on spine. Vol. I contains letters from 1916 to1925 (pages 1 - 813) as well as preface, foreword and frontispiece of Justice Holmes. Vol. II contains letters from 1926 to 1935 (pages 815 - 1525), a biographical appendix and an index, with a photo of Laski as the frontispiece. Both volumes are clean and complete, no underlining or highlighting. Vol. II has a tape-repair holding pages 821-825 in place; Vol. I has a small blemish on the backstrip on the front cover. Both volumes have obviously been read and bindings are a bit loose but holding well. There is a bit of wear and bumping at corners and spine ends. Overall, both volumes rate as Very Good. These volumes remind us, in time of text and twitter, that our predecessors did, indeed, do some things exceedingly well.[Due to the size and weight of this two volume set, express/priority orders or orders from outside the U.S. will require additional postage.}.
