thren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the Gospel, and believe; now therefore why tempt ye God to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 17 Tell it unto the church.] In those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God and serve tables; wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. Ac. vi. 1-3. The apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter (circumcision); and when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and bre

Let him be unto thee.] Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned, and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. Ro. xvi. 17, 18. See preced. com. I wrote unto you in an epistle, not to company with fornicators; yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within? But

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw your, selves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. And if any man obey not our word, by this epistle note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed, yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. 2 The. iii. 6. 14, 15. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness; from such withdraw thyself. Ti. vi. 5. If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. 2 John x. 11. An heathen man.] See chap. vi. 7. And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the Lord God of Israel, did eat, and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy. Ezr. vi. 21. Ye shall know that I am the Lord, for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you. Ez. xi. 12. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? and what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? and what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in trem; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people; wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 2 Co. vi. 14-17. I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. A publican.] See chap. v. 46.; xi. 19-21. 31, 32. Then drew near all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. Lu. xv. 1. I thank thee (prayed the Pharisee) that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. Lu. xviii. 11. And behold, there was a man named Zaccheus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus, who he was, and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. Lu. xix. 2, 3.

18 Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth.] See chap. xvi. 19. And they (the apostles) wrote letters by "them" ("Paul and Barnabas") after this manner, The apostles and elders and brethren, send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia. Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law, to whom we gave no such commandment; it seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth : for it seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; that ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle; which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation. Ac. xv. 23-31. To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and no man shutteth, and shutteth and no man openeth ; I know thy works; behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it; for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. Re. iii. 7, 8.

you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. I have chosen you and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. John xv. 7. 16. "These all" ("the disciples") continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Ac. i. 14. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place; and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Ac. ii. 1,2. When "they" ("the church of Christ") heard "that" ("what the chief priests and elders had said, threatening Peter and John"), they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is. Now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants that with all boldness they may speak thy word, by stretching forth thine hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child, Jesus! And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Ac. iv. 24. 29. 30, 31. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word (said the twelve apostles). Ac. vi. 4. Peter was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. Ac. xii. 5. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the Gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds, that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ep. vi. 18, 19, 20. I know that "this" ("Paul's imprisonment at Rome") shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Phi. i. 19. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another; and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous

man availeth much. Ja. v. 14, 15, 16. And "these" (my "two witnesses") are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth, and if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies, and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed; these have power to shat heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophecy; and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Re xi. 4, 5, 6.

It shall be done for them.] Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do; that the Father may be glorified in the Son, if ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. John xiv. 13, 14. In that day (after Christ's resurrection and ascension) ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. chap. xxi. 22.

20 Two or three are gathered together.] The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge. xlix. 10. The same day (that Mary Magdalene had seen the Lord) at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And after eight days again his disciples were within; and Thomas with them; then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. John xx. 19. 26. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my Spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ (I have judged), to deliver such an one (the incestuous person) unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Co. v. 4, 5. Paul, and Sylvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father, and in the Lord Jesus Christ, grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 The. i. 1. And what thou seest (said the voice to John) write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me ; and being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; and in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. 22 But, until seventy times seven.] chap. vi. 11-15. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. And let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. lv. 7. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remynant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again; he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities: and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Mi. vii. 18, 19. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught against any; that your Father which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses; but if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Mar. xi. 25, 26. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome

evil with good. Ro. xii. 21, Be ye angry and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice; and be kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Ep. iv. 26. 31, 32. Be ye therefore followers of God as dear children. Ep. v. 1. Put on bowels of mercies, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another. 23 Is the kingdom of heaven, &c.] See chap. iii. 2.; xiii. 24. 31. 33. 44, 45. 47. 52. Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. Mat. xxv. 1.

Which would take account.] After a long time the Lord of those servants cometh and reckoneth with them. Mat. xxv. 19, &c. There was a certain rich man which had a steward, and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of your stewardship, for thou mayest be no longer steward, Lu. xvi. 1, 2. A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Lu. xix. 12, 13. 15. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Ro. xiv. 12. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts. And then shall every man have praise of God, 1 Co. iv. 5. For we must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ, that every one may receive the things done in his body according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. 2 Co. v. 10, 11.

24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, 25 which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had

not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and 26 children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord have 27 patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the Lord of that

24 Owed him.] There was a certain creditor (said Jesus in a parable) who had two debtors, the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty; and when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Lu. vii. 41, 42. Suppose ye (said Jesus) that those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay, but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Lu. xiii. 4, 5. "He" ("the unjust steward") called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord? And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill and write fourscore, &c. Lu. xvi. 5-7.

Ten thousand talents.] Then the chief of the fathers, and princes of the tribes of Israel, gave for the service of the house of God, of gold, five thousand talents, and ten thousand drams; and of silver, ten thousand talents, and of brass, eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 1 Ch. xxix. 7. O my God (said Ezra), I am ashamed, and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. Ezr. ix. 6. There cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead, and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord, and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bond-men. 2 Ki. iv. 1. Now our flesh (said Nehemiah) is as the flesh of

our brethren, our children as their children; and lo, we bring into bondage our sons, and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to redeem them: for other men have our lands and vineyards. And I said unto them (the nobles and rulers who exacted usury), We, after our ability, have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen, and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer. Ne. v. 5. 8. Thus saith the Lord (to the Jews), Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement whom I have put away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away. Is 1. 1.

26 Have patience with me.] See verse 29. Tell me (said Jesus) which of “them” (“ the debtors") will love him most (the creditor who forgave them both)?
