lid of the Spirit. 1
erer blessed be the Lord, My Saviour and my shield! He sends his Spirit with his word,
To arm me for the field. 2 When all my foes their force unite,
He makes my soul his care; Instructs me in the heav'nly fight,
And guards me through the war. 3 A friend and helper so divine
My fainting hope shall raise:
(195.) L. M. 177.
The Holy Spirit a Comforter. 1 SYRE the blest Coroforter is nigh,
'Tis he sustains my fainting heart; Else would my hope for ever die,
And ev'ry cheering ray depart. 2 When some kind promise glads my soul,
Do I not find his healing voice The tempest of my fears control,
And bid my drooping pow’rs rejoice? 8 What less than thine almighty word
Can raise my heart from earth and dust, And bid me cleave to thee, my Lord,
My life, my treasure, and my trust! * And when my cheerful hope can say,
“I love my God, and taste his grace;" Lord, is it not thy blissful ray,
Which brings this dawn of sacred peace! 5 Let thy kind Spirit in my heart
For ever dwell, O God of love; And light and heav'nly peace impart, Sweet carnest of the joys above.
178. (196.) L. M. AMIDST a world of hopes and fears,
A world of cares, and toils, and tears, Where foes alarm, and dangers threat,
And pleasures kill, and glories cheat: 2 Send down, O Lord!' a heav'nly ray,
To guide me in the doubtful way;
To guard me in the dang'rous hour.
In which the thoughtless many run,
Safe lead me to thy heav'nly hill.
That charm, delight, transport the soul; And every panting wish shall be Possess'd of boundless bliss in thee. 179.
(198.) C. M.
Breathing after holiness. 1 O THAT the Lord, would guide my wayą
To know and do his will!
And make my heart sincere;
But keep my conscience clear. 3 Assist my soul, too apt to stray,
A stricter watch to keep;
1 Make me to walk in thy commaads;
'Tis a delightful road: Nor let my head, or heart, or hands, Offend against my God.
P. M. 180.
To the blessed Spirit. · HOLY Ghost, dispel onr sadness,
Pierce the clouds of sinful night:
Breathe thy life and spread thy light;
Hear, Oh! hear our supplication. 2 From that height which knows no measures
As a gracious shower descend: Bringing down the richest treasure
Man can wish, or God can send. O thou GLORY, shining down From the FATHER and
the Sox, Grant us thy illumination!
Rest on all this congregation. 3 Come, thou best of an donations
God can give, or we implore;
We need wish for nothing more;
Rest on all this congregation,
P. M. 181.
Address to the Spirit.
Enlivåning, consecrating, fire,
with celestial heat,
2 In our cold breasts O strike a spark
Of that pure flame which seraphs feet; Nor let us wander in the dark,
Or lie benumb'd and stupid still. Come, vivifying Spirit, come!
And make our hearts thy constant home. 3 Let pure devotion's fervours rise!
Let ev'ry pious passion glow! O let the raptures of the skies
Kindle in our cold hearts below. Come, purifying Spirit, come,
And make our souls thy constant home!
THE GOSPEL CALI..
S. M. 182. • Behold, now is the accepted Time.
2 Cor. vi. 2.
Now is the day of grace;
And seek the Saviour's face. 2 Now is th' accepted time,
The Saviour calls to-day;
Then why should you delay? 8 Now is th'accepted time,
The gospel bids you come;
Declares there yet room. 4 Lord, draw reluctant souls,
And feast them with thy love;
5 At length around thy throne
They shall thy face behold; While thro' eternity they'll strive Their raptures to unfold.
P. M. 183. Come and welcome to Jesus Christ.
Isaiah lv. l. · COME, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore! Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity join'd with power: He is able,
He is willing: doubt no more.
God's free bounty glorify:
Every grace that brings us nigh-
Come to Jesus Christ, and buy. 3 Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
Is to feel your need of him;
Lost and ruin'd by the fall!
You will never come at all. Not the righteous,
Sinners Jesus came to call, 5 View him prostrate in the garden;
On the ground your Maker lies On the bloody tree behold him;
Hear him cry, before he dies, " It is finished!" Sinner, will not this suffice?
