*Now, my Saviour, Now, my Saviour, Now, my ut - most Sa-viour, come.

[blocks in formation]

2 By the tenderness that wept
O'er the grave where Laz'rus slept;
By the bitter tears that flow'd
Over Salem's lost abode,-
Saviour, look with pitying eye;
Saviour, help me, or I die.

3 By thy lonely hour of prayer;
By the fearful conflict there;
By thy cross and dying cries;
By thy one great sacrifice,-
Saviour, look with pitying eye;
Saviour, help me, or I die.

4 By thy triumph o'er the grave;
By thy power the lost to save;
By thy high, majestic throne;
By the empire all thine own,—
Saviour, look with pitying eye;
Saviour, help me, or I die.
351

Come, and welcome.

FROM the cross uplifted high,

174-a.

Where the Saviour deigns to die, What melodious sounds we hear Bursting on the ravish'd ear:Love's redeeming work is doneCome and welcome, sinner, come!

2 Sprinkled now with blood the throne-
Why beneath thy burdens groan?
On his piercéd body laid,
Justice owns the ransom paid;
Bow the knee,-embrace the Son-
Come and welcome, sinner, come!
3 Spread for thee, the festal board
See with richest bounty stored;
To thy Father's bosom press'd,
Thou shalt be a child confess'd,
Never from his house to roam;
Come and welcome, sinner, come!

Greatness and condescension of God.

2 The thunders of his hand Keep the wide world in awe; His wrath and justice stand

To guard his holy law;

And where his love resolves to bless,
His truth confirms and seals the grace.

3 Through all his mighty works
Amazing wisdom shines;
Confounds the powers of hell,
And all their dark designs;
Strong is his arm, and shall fulfil
His great decrees and sov'reign will.
4 And will this sov'reign King
Of glory condescend;-
And will he write his name,
My Father and my Friend?

I love his Name, I love his word;
Join all my powers to praise the Lord.

Who lengthens out our trials here,
And spares us yet another year.
2 Barren and wither'd trees,
We cumber'd long the ground;
No fruit of holiness

On our dead souls was found; Yet doth he us in mercy spare, Another and another year.

3 When justice bared the sword
To cut the fig-tree down,
The pity of the Lord

Cried,-Let it still alone:
The Father mild inclines his ear,
And spares us yet another year.
4 Jesus, thy speaking blood

From God obtain' the grace, Who therefore hath bestow'd On us a longer space; Thou didst in our behalf appear, And, lo! we see another year. 5 Then dig about the root; Break up our fallow ground; And let our gracious fruit

To thy great praise abound; O let us all thy praise declare, And fruit unto perfection bear.

Your Head to glorify,

With all his saints ascend:
Ye pure in heart, obtain the grace
To see, without a veil, his face.

4 The everlasting doors

Shall soon the saints receive,
With seraphs, thrones, and powers,
In glorious joy to live;
Far from a world of grief and sin,
With God eternally shut in.

5 Then let us wait to hear

The trumpet's welcome ́ sound:
To see our Lord appear,

May we be watching found:

And when thou dost the heavens bow, Be found-as, Lord, thou find'st us now

1. Come on, my part-ners in distress, My com-rades through the wil-der-ness,

[blocks in formation]

2 Beyond the bounds of time and space, Look forward to that heavenly place,

The saints' secure abode;

On faith's strong eagle pinions rise,
And force your passage to the skies,
And scale the mount of God.

3 Who suffer with our Master here,
We shall before his face appear,

And by his side sit down;
To patient faith the prize is sure;
And all that to the end endure

The cross, shall wear the crown.
4 Thrice blessed, bliss-inspiring hope!
It lifts the fainting spirits up;

It brings to life the dead:

Our conflicts here shall soon be past,
And you and I ascend at last,
Triumphant with our Head.

5 That great mysterious Deity,
We soon with open face shall see;
The beatific sight

Shall fill the heavenly courts with praise,
And wide diffuse the golden blaze
Of everlasting light

The love of Jesus.

JESUS, thou soul of all our joys,

For whom we now lift up our voice,
And all our strugth exert,

Vouchsafe the grace we humbly claim;
Compose into a thankful frame,
And tune thy people's heart.

2 While in the heavenly work we join, Thy glory be our whole design,

Thy glory, not our own:-
Still let us keep this end in view,
And still the pleasing task pursue,
To please our God alone.

3 Thee let us praise, our common Lord,
And sweetly join, with one accord,
Thy goodness to proclaim:
Jesus, thyself in us reveal,
And all our faculties shall feel

Thy harmonizing Name.

4 With calmly reverential joy, O let us all our lives employ

In setting forth thy love;

And raise in death our triumph higher, And sing, with all the heavenly choir, That endless song above.

575

Prayer for power over temptation.

HYMNS.

167-c. 411 Pleading the Saviour's vicarious sacrifice. 164-b.

HELP, Lord, to whom for help I fly,
And still my tempted soul stand by
Throughout the evil day;

The sacred watchfulness impart,
And keep the issues of my heart,
And stir me up to pray.

2 My soul with thy whole armour arm;
In each approach of sin, alarm,

And show the danger near:
Surround, sustain, and strengthen me,
And fill with godly jealousy
And sanctifying fear.

3 Whene'er my careless hands hang down, O let me see thy gath'ring frown,

And feel thy warning eye;

And starting, cry, from ruin's brink,—
Save, Jesus, or I yield, I sink;

O save me, or I die.

4 If near the pit I rashly stray, Before I wholly fall away,

The keen conviction dart;
Recall me by that pitying look,-
That kind, upbraiding glance, which broke
Unfaithful Peter's heart.

5 In me thine utmost mercy show,
And make me, like thyself below,
Unblamable in grace;
Ready prepared and fitted here,
By perfect holiness, to' appear
Before thy glorious face.

The pilgrim's happy lot.

HOW happy is the pilgrim's lot;

How free from every anxious thought, From worldly hope and fear! Confined to neither court nor cell, His soul disdains on earth to dwell, He only sojourns here.

2 This happiness in part is mine,
Already saved from low design,

From every creature love;
Blest with the scorn of finite good,
My soul is lighten'd of its load,

And seeks the things above.

3 There is my house and portion fair;
My treasure and my heart are there,
And my abiding home;
For me my elder brethren stay,
And angels beckon me away,
And Jesus bids me come.

4 I come, thy servant, Lord, replies;
I come to meet thee in the skies,

And claim my heavenly rest!
Soon will the pilgrim's journey end;
Then, O my Saviour, Brother, Friend,
Receive me to thy breast!

AUTHOR of faith, to thee I cry,

165-α.

To thee, who wouldst not have me die,
But know the truth and live:

Open mine eyes to see thy face;
Work in my heart the saving grace;
The life eternal give.

2 Shut up in unbelief, I groan,
And blindly serve a God unknown,
Till thou the veil remove;
The gift unspeakable impart,
And write thy Name upon my heart,
And manifest thy love.

3 I know the work is only thine;
The gift of faith is all divine;

But, if on thee we call,
Thou wilt that gracious gift bestow,
And cause our hearts to feel and know
That thou hast died for all.

4 Thou bidd'st us knock and enter in,-
Come unto thee, and rest from sin,-

The blessing seek and find:

Thou bidd'st us ask thy grace, and have;
Thou canst, thou wouldst, this moment save
Both me and all mankind.

5 Be it according to thy word;
Now let me find my pard'ning Lord;
Let what I ask be given:
The bar of unbelief remove;
Open the door of faith and love,
And let me into heaven.
