-3 vols. in 1, 8vo. gothic letter, printed in black and red, with woodcuts; panelled calf, £50. 1538

The body of the Prymer is entirely in English; the Latin original appears in smaller type on the margins. The Exposition is similarly printed; and has no distinct title-leaf. The Epistles and Gospels has a distinct title, and is printed in double columns. The collation is as follows:-a-} in eights,

four leaves (altogether 188 numbered leaves); a-g in eights, h 4 leaves (60 unnumbered leaves); - in eights, 7 leaves (67 numbered and 4 unnumbered leaves). All the three works issued from the one press and were evidently intended to be published together.

I can only trace one copy of this edition as having been sold; which was just thirty years ago. It wanted the Epistles and Gospels.

38143 SARUM PRIMER. The prymer in Englysh and latyn, after the vse of Sarum. . with the exposicyon vpon the Psalme called Miserere.. with the Epystels and Gospels. sm. 4to. gothic letter, printed in black and red, with woodcuts; wanting three leaves, and a little wormed near the end; purple morocco extra, gilt edges, by Mackenzie, Mr. Maskell's copy, £25.

At end of Primer: London.. by Thomas Petyt.

COLLATION: (?4 leaves); B-O in eights, eights, E six leaves; - in eights, seven leaves. leaves, the title is in facsimile and leaves 2 and 4 are leaf Jiii is wanting.

M.D.XLiij. (1543) four leaves; A-D in Of the four preliminary wanting; in the Primer,

According to Mr. Maskell, this edition of the Sarum Primer was for its fulness preferable to most others.-On leaf 36, in the "Verses of St. Bernard," there is a curious error, "Lord, thou hast broken my bones" (for bonds).

There is no copy in the British Museum. The Bodleian library has one; and I have traced three others, which were all imperfect.

COLLATION preliminaries, 5 leaves; Godly prayers, etc. *,, ( ), •·|·, in fours; Matyns, etc. A-P, Pb, in fours; three leaves; Q K, a-į, (Į, Aa-d in fours; Plaine and godly treatise, R-Z in fours.

There are two copies in the British Museum; one of them very imperfect, the other supposed to be perfect but apparently wanting one of the preliminary leaves (20 instead of 21 as above). This is one of the most important editions of the Sarum Primer. As in the preceding instance, the body of the Prymer is in English and the Latin original in smaller type in the margins.

38145 SARUM PRIMER. This prymer of Sarysbury vse is set out a long without ony serchyng, vvith many prayers, goodly pyctures in the matyns of our lady. And benewly emprynted at Rouen, .. Rothomagi apud Robertu Valentinū. . M.D.Lv.— HERE BEGYNNETH THE PYSTELS AND GOSPELS, of euery Sonday, and holy Daye in the yere.. Rothomagi, in officina Florentini Valentini. M.D.Lv.-2 vols. in 1, 12mo. gothic letter, printed in black and red, with woodcuts; eight leaves wanting in the Pystels; old calf, gilt edges, originally in the possession of Queen

Elizabeth and having her arms transferred on a label from the original binding to the front cover of this volume, £48.

(Rouen, 1555)

There is some writing of the Elizabethan period in the book which might, possibly, be the Queen's own. The inscription on the last page is "Frons mulieris meretricis facta est tibi," which would be a curiously significant phrase for Queen Elizabeth to write.-The book belonged to Bishop White Kennett early in the last century and has his "Wh. K." on the title-page. The present binding is of Herbert's time, and the Queen's arms were evidently then shaved off the original cover so as to be mounted like a label on this. COLLATION: Primer, - in eights. Pystels and Gospels: -H in eights (eight leaves wanting), K 4 leaves. The greater part of the Prymer is in Latin only, but the headings and many of the prayers are in English. "The maner to lyue wel" is the first piece which follows the Calendar. It is Compyled by maystre Iohan quentin.. Translated out of Frenche.. by Robert Copland," and occupies 7 pages.—The Pystells, etc. are entirely in English.

COLLATION, T, +, A-R, in eights; altogether 160 leaves in the
Primer. The Pistles and Gospels contain A-R in fours, and 2 leaves.

The second copy above described has the signature of Wyllyam Smythe
(about 1580-90) several times on the back of the title, with these words-
Enuy waketh and Charite slepeth
Couitus taketh and Pou'ty wepyth

repeated at the end, with other scribblings, including

Tempore felici multi numerantur amici
Cum fortuna perit, nullus amicus erit.

Newelye Imprynted thys present yeare. 1557 . 12mo. printed in black and red, in parallel columns, the Latin in Roman and the English in Gothic characters; with woodcuts; a rather short copy with a leaf or two mended, in purple morocco gilt, gilt edges, £16.

London by the assygnes of Thon Wayland. . 1557 the same, a large, fine and sound copy in the original plain calf binding, £24.

1557 COLLATION: A-Y, Aa-Dd, in eights. The catchword on A 8 is "The Passyon," and refers to "The Passio of our lord" on leaf B 5; although the first words on B i are "The beginning of the holye Gospel of S. Iohn."

38150 EPISTLES AND GOSPELS. HERE BEGYNNETH THE PYSTELS AND GOSPELS OF THE SONDAYES AND FESTYUALL HOLY DAYES, NEWLY

CORRECTED AND AMENDED, smallest 4to. gothic letter, leaf S 1
mended, leaf S 4 and the leaf of Table at end wanting, old russia,
£7.
(about 1540)

There are thirty lines in a full page: the signatures are A to X in fours, except X, in which there were probably only two leaves, or perhaps three. The present copy ends with leaf X 1, on the bottom of the reverse of which are the words " here after foloweth the Table of this present booke." Leaf X 1 is marked lxxxii in the foliation, instead of lxxxi, by a mistake which begins on leaf T 1, which bears lxxiiii instead of lxxiii. (It may have begun on the missing leaf S 4, which ought to have borne the numeral lxxii.)

The title as given above appears at the heading of the text on A 1: the Epistles and Gospels were usually printed thus without separate title-pages, so as to be annexed to one or other contemporary edition of the Primer.

Reformed Church.

38151 BISHOP HILSEY'S PRIMER. The prymer both in Englyshe and Latyn Anno. M.D.FL. Prynted in the house late the graye freers by Rychard grafton and Edward whytchurche. . . 12mo. gothic letter, printed in black and red; fine and perfect copy in black morocco, gilt edges, from the libraries successively of James Bindley, Sir Mark Sykes, and Mr. Fuller Russell, £60.

At end: . . London.. Richard Grafton and Edward Whytechurche. 1540 Besides this copy, I can only find record of one other, formerly Mr. Maskell's, and now in the B. M., imperfect.

COLLATION: Title and Calendar, 7 leaves; The Passion-Lessons followed by the Pater-noster, Creed, etc. 9 leaves; Matyns of our Lady, etc. 88 unnumbered leaves; Pystels and Gospels of the Sondayes, etc. 80 numbered leaves. -Or by signatures: +, *, A-L, A-K, in eights altogether 184 leaves.

Amongst the preliminary leaves on the reverse of iiij, we find "An order and forme of byddynge of the bedes by the kynges commaundementes' which begins with these words: "Ye shall praye for the whole Congregacyon of Chrystes Church, and specially for thys churche of Englande, wherin fyrst I commende to youre deuout prayers the kynges most excellent maiestye, supreme head immediately under God of the spyritualtie and temporalitie of the same churche, and for the prosperite of the noble Prynce Edward hys sonne." The last chapter in the section" of workes" has this heading: "The bysshoppe of Rome with hys adherentes destroyers of all estates."

John Hilsey, Bishop of Rochester (1535-38), was the compiler of this Primer, at the request of Thomas Cromwell; and it was first printed by Wayland in 1539. This edition by Grafton and Whitchurch, who had become the recognized servants of Cromwell and Cranmer, was modified from the original form, and was probably the first appearance of the book with a kind of authorizing sanction. Cromwell's disgrace and execution took place not long after the publication of the little volume, and may have contributed to heighten its rarity. Hilsey's name does not appear in the book.

38152 KING HENRY'S PRIMER. [ORARIUM seu Libellus Precationum per Regiam majestatem et clerum Latine editus], 12mo. Roman letter, printed in red and black, with woodcuts; title supplied in MS., the last of the preliminary leaves wanting, and a leaf or two at the end; generally a fine sound copy in old calf, £5. Ex officina Richardi Grafton, 1545 The copy in the British Museum is imperfect. COLLATION OF THIS

COPY: A, eight leaves (there ought to be ten); A-R in eights, S 1 leaf (instead of two, or four ?)

This is the Latin part separately issued of the King's Authorized Primer, which was printed in English and Latin by Grafton in 1545. It is of excessive rarity.

[At end:] Mense Iunij M.D.xlix. (1549) Edward the Fifth's first Common Prayer. In any shape or sort the book is a very uncommon one; but when the copy perfect, large, and healthy, like this one, it is indeed a rarity which many of the richest booklovers might covet in vain. The royal order printed on the last page regarding the price of the book commands that "No maner of persone shall sell the present Booke vnbounde aboue the price of two shillynges and two pence. And bounde in Forell for iis. xd. and not aboue. And the same bounde in Shepes Lether for iis iiid and not aboue. Imprinted at London in Poules churcheyarde, at the signe of the Brasen serpent, by Reynold Wolfe. Cum priuilegio ad imprimendum solum. Anno Domini .M.D.L. (1550) EXCESSIVELY RARE; only two other copies apparently being known. Before 1850 the Maskell-Lathbury copy was considered unique, till this one and that in the British Museum were discovered.-The work is an arrangement of the Gospel lessons of the year in two parts (Sundays and festivals) with an exposition on each. The exposition was written by Antonius Corvinus in Latin; and was translated and adapted to the new service of the English Church by some one whose name we cannot learn. He was not Taverner, a similar work by whom had been for several years in circulation, compiled before the reformation of the liturgy.

COLLATION: 4 preliminary leaves; a, b, 4 leaves each; t-r in eights; y six leaves; A-P in eights, six leaves.

This copy contains on the title-page the autograph of Simon Bovnde, in whose hand also are some MS. alterations in the book, evidently made in 1553 for the purpose of fitting the volume to become QUEEN MARY'S COMMON PRAYER. This is extremely curious.
