Fifteen leaves, in small Gothic characters, twenty-seven long lines to a full page.

Amongst the pictures in this curious book we find one of the Rainbow, and views of Rome and of Cologne. On the last leaf, just above the year 1454, and between the narrations of two facts which occurred in 1457, there is a statement "Artifices mira celeritate subtiliores solito fiunt. Et impressores librorum multiplicantur in terra." This was written by the author, Werner Rolevink, a Carthusian monk at Cologne, in or before 1474; in which year Ther Hoerner printed the first edition from the author's own first fair copy of his work. Rolevink (born in 1425) had lived as a monk in Cologne from about 1447, and, from the nature of his studies, must have been personally acquainted with Zell, and whoever else introduced printing into Cologne. His acquaintance with that art and its history cannot have begun later than 1462-3; consequently, the assertion above quoted has much greater force than a mere obiter dictum. Yet, up to 1457, we only know positively of the three

Mainz printers.-Veldener reprinted Ther Hoernen's text; having, as even his types testify, close business-relations with Cologne, although he never printed there as an independent typographer

Johann of Westphalia (1474-96).

The first book produced by this great printer at Louvain, where the art had been introduced one year earlier by Veldener. The rubricator's inscription is so interesting that it deserves citation: Rubrice per me facte sunt et complete anno 1477 mensis Junii 21 in quo anno villa Attrebatensis (i.e. Arras) a Francorum rege Ludovico obsessa eidem regi in manus reddita est. B. V. Sauary.

A very rare work of medieval geography.-The signatures run as follows:-a-k in eights (of which a-1 are printed sidewise in the same manner as the signatures of the Aeneas Sylvius) and I four leaves; aa—ii in eights, and kk 10 leaves. All these signatures must have been added after the printing of the book, as the original manuscript signatures in red ink are still visible on many of the leaves.-A MS. inscription on the first blank page records the possession by the Carthusians of Bruges, to whom it was given by their confrère Martinus le Bulletur, who had enriched their library with many and various volumes (about 1485).

Louanii i domo Iohānis de westfalia . MCCCClxxxv.. (1485)

A contemporary inscription on the first page runs thus "Ista pars sanctorum sequentium est pro conventu M.. (defaced) juxta Embricam." The words after conventu are almost effaced, but it is plain that the book was meant for a convent in Emmerich. Underneath, in a hand of almost the same date, are the words "Datur nunc pro conventu fratrum Minorum de observantia in Dursten."

Petri Aegidii Antuerpiēsis, & arte Theodorici Martini Alustensis . primum accuratissime editus, sm. 4to. Editio Princeps, Roman letter, 54 leaves, 36 lines per page, woodcut of Utopia on the back of the title; crimson morocco extra, from the Boutourlin library, £8. 8s Printer's mark on last leaf, with his name: Theodric' Martini (1516)

The date is obtained from the preliminary pieces. The first edition of a book which has attained to so great a celebrity is always interesting. The second edition (Basel, 1518) is much more common, and is frequently regarded erroneously as the princeps.

At the end of each volume there are several examples of the French language as used in the documents and proceedings upon which Carlerius had been appointed to deliver juridical opinions. As a specimen I cite a couple of lines:-"Pour che q nous auons goy lonch tamps de pluseurs heritages." "Le quelle feme apres che q elle nous eult vendu led' fiefs se ochist, soit sceu se a prinche doibt aptenir led' fiefs." The long enjoyment referred to in the first extract appears as longhe gooanche.
