Colonie industria Henrici Quentel [1499]

A treatise on Logic, in the form of an Aristotelian commentary. [Colonia] Excudebat suis typis Eucharius Cervicornus [circa 1516]
This rare and curious volume is a history of the martyrdom of the family
of the Maccabees and their mother, which is fully represented in the curious
woodcuts with which the book is illustrated. The last three represent the
finding of the martyrs' bones and their preservation in the College of the
Maccabees at Cologne.

Ludwig Hohenwang (1466-1501).

36047 VOCABULARIUM LATINUM ET TEUTONICUM, folio, Gothic letter, 289 printed leaves, 35 lines per page, calf gilt, £14. 10s [Ulme, per L. Hohenwang, circa 1469]

This rare volume has been shown very clearly to be one of the earliest books printed in Ulm at the press of L. Hohenwang, about 1470, by Dr. Hassler, in his very careful and elaborate treatise on the subject.

36048 [LUCIANI ASINUS, Latine interpretatus per Poggium.] Poggius plurima salutem dicit Cosmo de medicis.. sm. folio, Gothic letter, 15 leaves, 33 or 34 lines to a full page, with 8 large woodcuts; old blue morocco extra, from the Sunderland library, £100.

[Ulma] Ex officina et ductu ludovici hohenwanng de Elchmgen (sic), s. a. [cir. 1472]

EXCESSIVELY RARE. Its rarity may be imagined from the fact that Hassler, the special bibliographer of the early press at Ulm, cites it with hesitation, on the authority of Panzer, and no one else appears to have seen it until now.

Besides the eight woodcuts referred to above (one of which is a repetition) there are two ornamental woodcut initials. The book is without catchwords, foliation, and signatures.

Johann Zainer (1469-84).

The Latin text and the German translation were probably issued at almost

the same time. There are no woodcuts in the Latin, which may mark perhaps a slight anteriority. The translator into German was probably Johann Zainer himself.

Finis diuersarum fabularum, sm. folio, Gothic letter of two sizes, 114 leaves, 42 lines per full page; with numerous woodcuts and woodcut initials, and arabesque border to the first two pages which face each other; blue morocco extra, richly gilt, gilt edges, by Lortic, very fine copy, with rough margins, £100. Sine nota (cir. 1475)

The first leaf is blank on the obverse, and bears the wood

cut of "Esopus" on the reverse. The signatures are a-q, of which a, c, e, g, i, 1, n, p, q, are in quires of eight leaves, the others in quires of six. This edition is described only by Dibdin, and the continuator of Brunet; and is referred by the latter to an Augsburg press, about 1472. There is an arabesque border of leaves and flowers enclosing the portrait of Æsop on leaf 1, and the first page of text on leaf 2.

Perhaps printed by Johann Zainer, but not in the same type as any of the three preceding articles. For the contents, see post. an undated edition described under the heading of Nürnberg, Koberger.

36053 JOANNES PRESBYTER. DE RITU ET MORIBUS INDORUM. Prespiter Johanes . . . amico suo Emanueli Rome gubernatori salute Sine nota (?Ulm, Zainer, 1475)

sm. 4to. vellum, £10.

The celebrated letter to the Byzantine Emperor Manuel, which reached Europe at the end of the twelfth century. A rare edition, containing 9 leaves (sign. a), 31 lines to a full page; the first page surrounded by a woodcut border, similar in character to what appears on the preceding Esopus, and the Petrarch which bears the name of Johann Zainer.

Leonard Holl (1482).

36054 PTOLEMÆI COSMOGRAPHIA (Latine reddita à Jac. Angelo) beatissimo patri Pavlo secvndo pontifici maximo (inscripsit) DONIS NICOLAVS Germanvs, folio, First Edition of the Ulm Ptolemy, splendidly printed in a semi-Gothic character, with fine woodcut initials, and the complete set of 31 maps, in contemporary colouring, a few of the leaves mended, and the leaf of colophon missing; calf, £10. (Ulme per Leonardum Hol, 1482) The world-map is marked "Insculptum est per Iohanne Schnitzer de Armszheim," who was probably the engraver of all the maps.

Conrad Dinckmut (1486-96).

This is the famous and world-wide story of Kalila and Dimna; known in mediæval Latin as the Directorium Humanæ Vitæ.

36056 CRONIGK (VON SCHWABEN), sm. folio, original edition, with numerous full-page woodcuts, illustrating scenes in Suabian history; slightly wormed; bound in brown morocco extra, gilt edges, £25. getruckt von Cunrad Dinckmut zu Vlm, 1486

The annals of this chronicle end with the sack of Mentz in 1462. The woodcuts are remarkable as rare examples of a little known school; they were probably designed and executed by Dinkmut himself, who had been an engraver before he became a typographer. He published a second edition in the same year as this, omitting however all the woodcuts but one.
