The U. P. Jal Nigam, set up in June 1975 as an autonomus Corporation in June 1975, has over the year not only gained in strength but has greatly expanded its activities. The U. P. Jal Nigam has created a proud record performance wise with over 120 constructions divisions and about 60 divisions for project preparation, The giant organisations is constantly on the move preparing and executing projects for improving urban water supply, making available safe, potable water to the 35,506 scarcity villages in the state carrying out projects to introduce sewerage facilities in urban areas where they did not exist. To this already huge task the U P. Jal Nigam was assigned with has been added yet another responsibility. In 1985 it was nominated as the nodal agency for implementing the Ganga Action Plan in Uttar Pradesh for controlling the hither-to unchecked flow of pollutants into the Ganga. To be entrusted with this all important task is indeed a recognisation of calibre of the U. P, Jal Nigam. Over the years since its establishment in 1975 as a wholly owned public sector undertaking of the Govt. of U. P.. the Jal Nigam has grown into a giant among giant multi-facet organisations. Today with an annual budget of over 110 crores the Nigam has a work force of over six thousand experienced engineers, specialists in various disciplines such as environmental engineering, civil construction, electrical, mechanical works and Water Quality testing. Apart from the funds received from the State Government the U. P. Jal Nigam is also funded by a variety of other sources such as Central Government and Central financing institutions like the L. I. C. Jal Nigam also receives funds for various projects from the World Bank, UNDP, UNICEF and Dutch Government. The Jal Nigam has made a name for itself by quenching the thirst of millions of parched throats and providing succour to the victims of the ravages of floods. The State owes gratitude to men of U. P. Jal Nigam who have dedicated themselves to the task of not only providing much-needed water to the people of the state but also providing sanitation facilities and creating awarness among the people of the need for sanitation. History has shown that there cannot be progress without water. All efforts have to be made not only by official agencies but also by voluntary institutions and members of the public to lend their fullest support to the Jal Nigam in its all important task. |
