When a fire and gas hazard occurs, data is automatically presented to the operator at the central control room console. The informaiton is presented in the ferm of alarm lists a..d logs all evants being time stamped. The graphic display on the VDU firstly shows an overview of the platform, automatically high-lighting detailed the fire area, and then presents map of the specific area, pinpointing detecters in the alarm state.

The fire and gas system is totally dualled, designed to operate at high level availability All processing of data from fire detection devices is performed on a two out of two vote—that is, both computer must agree before an executive action can take place.

Should a fal ure occur in one of the computers the system will gracefully down-grade to a one out of two operation and still maintain fire cover for the platform.

Each fire detection system is self diagnostic, being tested on a regular basis. The one-man calibration feature designed into this system allows calibration of gas detection equipment in the field to be performed by a single technician in the field.

Comprehensive self diagnostics will reveal failure within the system by gene. rating audible and visual alarms, Constant testing and self diagnosis almost eliminates the incidence of false alarms-of particular importance in locations where hearing an alarm may, in itself, induce panic and a consequent hazard. This is supported by local maintenance facilities.

?

An engineering and maintenance console allows engineering access to the overall system for testing. re configuration and diagnosis, allowing operations and maintenance work to be carried out in parallel,

Different

Dual architecture is used to provide a high level of availability which is sup. ported by a modular replacement policy maximising repair time. The functional design specification called for as much commonality between the F and G and PSD/ESD systems as could be deemed practicable. At a glance, they are very similar. In fact, the safety concepts for the two systems are very different.

In the event of an alarm or trip the PSD/ESD system is designed to initiate a partial or total plant shutdown by dis connecting (switching off) powered devices such as process valves, pumps, etc.

The F and G system, however, works in the reverse mode, i. e., it needs to switch on audible and visual alarms, beacons, etc when an alarm condition is detected. There is automatic release of extinguishment in the event of a confirmed (coincident) fire alarm.

More than 2,100 field devices arranged in zones are distributed throughout the platform to protect people and plant from fire and gas hazards. Each F and G outstation has stand-alone capability by using indication door matrices which provide local fire teams with tire zona status information. The matrices are protected from accidental operation by covered keyswitches, These are also used to inhibit the system during maintenance,

The objectives as determined by the design specification callad for a system of high reliability providing maximum availability for the process. The ICS/PGS 2000 controllers and all the essential fire and gas input and output devices are configured using redundant architecture, in this case dupliceted. Add to this philosophy the system diagnostics developed fit is maximised without incurring penalties, by 1CS and the reliability/availability benein size, weight, power and cost

The availability methodology has been developed by ICS and is currently supplied, installed and maintained in over 100 safety systems around the world.

Ron West, Technical Director of ICS. puts the need for automatic safety system in context. "Trust the technology in an emergency situation, human factor failure rate in the critical first minute is high. With complicated non-routine operator actions there is a one in four chance of the wrong decision being made."
