will do things which they know and admit are harmful. No, God made no mistake.

Suppose you see a man on the beach day after day picking up pebbles. Every day, he is always looking down, making great piles of useless stones. Suppose you go to him one day and say, "Friend, your family have smallpox; you better go home and look after them." But he pays no attention; he just goes on picking up stones. You would begin to think him crazy, would you not? One day, his home takes fire, and his entire property is in danger. You quickly warn him, but he pays no heed. Now you are certain there is something the matter with his head.

Need we draw the comparison? There are few persons in the United States but have heard that Jesus is soon coming; few but know of the judgment; few but have heard the gospel. They know that soon their whole family and all their neighbors, unless they repent, will perish in a plague worse than smallpox. They know that the Bible declares the world and all therein will soon be burned up. But do the morally insane pay any heed? What are they doing? Simply picking up pebbles! If they were not mad, they could not do it. Were it not for this verse, I could not account for the actions of a great many people.

Take another illustration of the intellectually insane. You see a man on the prairie, making a long, long ladder. He is neglecting everything else to build that ladder. Now it is a mile in length, yet he keeps on. You wonder what can be the matter with him. One day you ask him why he is making so long a ladder. He replies, "I expect to use this ladder to climb to the moon. You are sure then that the man is crazy.

Attempting the impossible! Many a man has been thought crazy because he attempted what appeared to men to be impossible, but afterwards it proved possible. But I am speaking of something beyond the range of

possibility. No one but a crazy man would try to build a ladder with which to climb to the moon. But the morally insane attempt the absolutely impossible every day. How? In many, many ways. I will name only a few. They are trying to find real peace and happiness in the deceitful pleasures of the world. They will never succeed, for peace and happiness are not there. Some are trying to find salvation by their own works or by bowing down to idols.

In a little town lived a very happy, devoted couple. They had no children; but apart from this, all the neighbors thought theirs an ideal home life. The husband suffered a long illness, which left him insane. He had to be confined in an asylum. Whenever afterwards his good wife visited him, he would rave at her, and tell everybody within hearing that she was very bad, that she tried to kill him, and much more equally unjust.

Because he was insane, this man looked upon his very best friend as his worst enemy. He treated her as such. Are you doing just as he did? The very best friend you ever had, the very best friend any man ever had, the Lord Jesus, who died for you,— do you treat as you would treat an enemy? You could not do this were not something radically wrong with your heart. You need a new heart, which God alone can give.

Many times, I have heard sinners call Christians "crazy." God puts matters the other way about. Soon it will be determined who are the sane and who are the insane. I care not though the world should call me crazy, if God says at last that I am sane. Intellectual insanity is an awful thing, but I would rather my little son be afflicted with this kind than be morally insane. Is it any wonder that the Bible speaks of this class in the resurrection as being raised to shame? The earth will be a great madhouse then. Will you be there? You need not be. There is a cure for moral insanity. The disease is difficult to cure, but there is a Physician

who is able to cure it. You know that of all diseases, insanity is hardest to cure. This is for two reasons. One reason is that insane people rarely believe they are insane. They usually think they are about right and everybody else is wrong; and until a man knows he is sick, he will never send for a doctor.

The second reason why insanity is difficult to cure is because the insane will not obey orders. The morally insane have the same difficulty. They know that the Bible says it is hard for a rich man to enter heaven, yet ninety-nine out of every hundred want to be rich. They know that only the pure in heart shall see God, yet they will see and hear and read what is impure.

case.

Dear reader, will you not face the facts? Acknowledge that God has told the truth. Pray for a knowledge of yourself. Determine to know the worst in your own Look into the mirror of God's holy law and see yourself in need of the Physician. Jesus can cure you if you will come to Him and obey orders. Surely you do not want written opposite your name in the books of record, "A moral maniac"!

"God Is Too Merciful to Damn

Anyone"

[graphic]

NE still hears, now and then, a few, usually men, say, "God is too merciful to damn anyone; everybody will be saved." There never was a greater mistake than this. There is no other hope quite so false. As a "refuge of lies," it is on a par with "There is no sin.” Both suggest a man who would put out his eyes so he would not see danger.

God desires you to be saved. He has made a plan by which mercy can rejoice against justice. The plan is broad enough to save you. Nobody need be damned. But if you will not be saved, if you refuse to let God save you when He would, then you condemn yourself, do you not? If you are lost, you can not blame God only yourself. You will only reap the fruit of your own choice reap what you have sown.

Anyone who thinks he can live in sin, abuse God's grace, despise His Son, and that then God will invite him into heaven at last, to a place beside Him on His throne, to live with sinless beings, has a very wrong idea of God.

For several reasons, it would be impossible for God to take an ungodly person to heaven. It would be ruinous to the moral government of the universe to do so. Think of the influence of even one rebel, one anarchist, in heaven! How many good potatoes must be packed around a rotten potato in order to save it? God would not be just to the inhabitants of the universe if He permitted even one unrepentant sinner to join the society of heaven.

To illustrate: Suppose that a man who is convicted of murder, is asked if he has anything to say before sentence is pronounced, and he says: "Your honor, I
