passing, and asked her where they were and where they were going. "Don't you know?" she replied. "We are on the glass railroad. Isn't it a beautiful train? Isn't the scenery beautiful?" "But what are these boxes I see?" "Oh, those are coffins! This train runs over a steep embankment at the end of the trip, and kills everybody. Then they gather up the boxes and place them along the track. But we don't care. It is a fine train! We are on the glass railroad!"

Some one has said that the road to destruction is down grade all the way, and the devil sees to it that the bridges are kept in good repair and the signboards newly painted. Can you rejoice at anything when it will work you only greater damnation? No one but a madman could. God says a man is really insane if he rejoices in his wealth, his ease, or his ability, while he is outside of Christ. "Madness is in their heart while they live." Ecclesiastes 9: 3.

The more you get, the more you must answer for the greater your responsibility. Perhaps you are a young man getting an education. How can you afford to come to the judgment an educated sinner? Is not God just to hold you to account for all His blessings? Is it not right that He should hold you to account for the Bible He gave you, for your Christian mother, for the knowledge of the gospel? God is just and righteous altogether. If He did not bring you to account for your acts of rebellion, for abusing His mercies, He would cease to be righteous. His moral kingdom would not be safe under any other principle of administration.

I wish I could hear you say: "It is enough! I am persuaded. I will not wait for anybody. I am ready to come. I will abuse my Saviour no more; no longer will I slight His offered love."

Come, then, into your Father's house. Come with your confession of folly and guilt. He will forgive you even now. But make haste. Satan is playing the game

of life for your soul. You see his hand winding the fatal chain about your neck. How long can you sit at ease and watch him do it? How can you consent to be led captive by the devil at his will, when you know it is his purpose to plunge you into the very depths of hell? It is sheer folly and madness to wait. Says Jesus: "Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."

Listen again to the invitation from the Father's great heart of love: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Isaiah 1: 18.

"O heart, dear heart, how canst thou grieve
A Friend so fond, a Friend so true?
How canst thou for an hour forget
The deathless love He hath for you?
Does pleasure's moment stretch itself
To equal all eternity?

And smile of earthly friend allure

Beyond the Friend who died for thee?

"O heart, blind heart, thou canst not see
The garden's darkly blackening hour,
Nor hovering demons gloating wild

O'er this their high though transient power.
Can gayety that costs so much---

Though it might span ten thousand years

Be offered 'gainst the piteous cry

Of Him who shed for you those tears?

"O heart, frail heart, canst thou forget
The darkness deep of Calvary,
The agony that filled the hour

He hung upon the awful tree?
Shall joy's thin veil suffice to hide

A scene so sad from laughing eyes?
An earthly suitor triumph while

The heavenly Lover, wounded, dies?"

"I Can't See Any Good in
Christianity"

HERE are not many who make the excuse, "I can not see any good in Christianity;" yet one hears it occasionally. In a measure, I sympathize with those who say it; for much of the Christianity so-called is of a very poor quality. Many professed Christians can hardly be distinguished from worldlings. They sing, act, talk, dress, and eat like such. But God knows His own. Those who have "a form of godliness" without its powerthe power that makes one Godlike I will never see the inside of the holy city.

There is everything good in genuine Christianity, but a certain class can not see it. Jesus spoke of them on this wise: "Seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them." Mark 4: 12.

A careful study of the words found in Ecclesiastes 9:3 may help us to comprehend more clearly why Christianity does not appeal to this class. God says, "The heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead."

Perhaps you have read this text, and thought it a rather strong statement for God to make, to say that sinners are "mad." But even if I could not understand it fully, I should believe it; for I have learned that when God makes a statement, it is true, whether I can understand it or not. Many things which were mysteries to me twenty years ago are mysteries no longer; therefore I look forward to the time when I shall see clearly what seems confusing now. An infidel once said to an aged Christian woman, "I can show you that the Bible is

false, so that you can see it with your own eyes." She replied, "No, you could not do that; for I would believe the Bible before I would believe my own eyes." Anyone who knows God, would say the same thing.

God tells us that the rebellious sinner is actually insane. Do not, in anger or disgust, say this is not true. Remember, God says it, not I. He knows, for He made these minds and hearts of ours, and surely understands all about them. Besides, I have proved it to my own satisfaction, that God here told the truth. Perhaps I shall be able to prove it to you.

There are two kinds of insanity. In one kind, the head is affected-intellectual insanity. But this is not the kind mentioned in our text. God is talking about men's hearts. Here it is the will that is affected. This heart disease we call moral insanity. A few comparisons between the intellectually insane and the morally insane, will enable you to see that the two classes act alike, although in one case the head is sick, and in the other, the heart. If the course of the one is very similar to that of the other, then you must agree with God when He says the sinner is "mad."

There was once a harmless fellow who went about the streets handing to all he met pieces of blank paper. As he handed them out, he would say, "Permit me to give you a ten-dollar bank note." Boys would point to their heads, and pass on. Everybody knew that the poor fellow was crazy. He actually thought that those pieces of blank paper were good bank notes. His mind was so diseased that he thought the worthless was precious, the counterfeit genuine.

Do the morally insane act anything like that? Yes, they do. From the actions of a sinner, one would be led to think that this life is everything, the future life nothing; that this world is all that is worth while, and the world to come of no value. His actions tell one that money, pleasure, worldly power and wisdom, are

the only things worth seeking after, and that God's treasures,― the Bible, forgiveness, peace, the cross, prayer, heaven,- are all spurious. Is it any wonder God says he is "mad"?

When I was eleven years old, I went with some friends to visit the state asylum located at Jamestown, North Dakota. It was about my first experience with crazy folks, and I have never forgotten what I saw that day.

There was one inmate who, the guard told us, was crazy over religion. True religion never made anyone crazy, though the neglect of it sometimes has. This fellow, in his demented condition, thought he was God. He would get up on a box or stool and preach to everybody within hearing. He frightened one young woman in our party by saying in a loud, stern manner: "Don't you know that I am God? Why don't you obey me?"

Perhaps you have seen some like him. He was to be pitied, for he did not know any better. The morally insane all think they are little gods. And they act accordingly. Their actions tell you that they live for self, that they want to be their own "boss." They are determined to do as they please. Their actions say: "I know no other God but myself. What care I whether God rules in the universe or not! What care I for Christ or Calvary! What care I for religion or the Bible! I am going to live for myself!" Did not God state a fact when He said they are "mad"?

There is a certain class of insane who must be watched continually, else they will harm themselves. I know of one who hanged himself, of another who jumped out of a hospital window and killed herself. In China, there is a kind who run about without any clothes on. They have no shame, no modesty. But the intellectually insane are not the only ones who injure themselves or who have no shame. The morally insane
