Tudor Church Music

To be published for the Carnegie United Kingdom Trust Editorial Committee: P. C. BUCK, M.A., D.Mus., E. H. FELLOWES, M.A., Mus.D., A. RAMSBOTHAM, M.A., R. R. TERRY, Mus. D., and S. TOWNSEND WARNER

Two Editions

1. Library Edition, with introductions, critical apparatus, and notes, in ten quarto volumes, each complete in itself. Subscription price for the ten volumes £10 10s. ; volumes separately from 30s. net per volume.

The Trustees, in introducing this work to the public, feel that they cannot emphasize the importance of the publication better than by quoting from a letter on the subject, addressed to them by Sir Henry Hadow, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, and Editor of the Oxford History of Music :

'I do not know whether it is quite realized that this is not a question of a mere Library Edition of a classic; it is the most important musical discovery ever made-far more important than Grove's discovery of the Schubert MSS. at Vienna. If you could imagine that the Elizabethan drama had been lost and now re-discovered, it would not be an extravagant parallel.'

2. Popular Edition, provided with expression marks and rendered practicable for performance; in it English works will appear with the original text, Latin works with English translation in addition to the original. To facilitate performance, the Editors have freely transposed the music to suit the compass of modern voices, and have not infrequently rearranged the voice parts. With the object of bringing out clearly the irregular rhythms of the music, bars are set at irregular intervals, containing two, three, or four units as required.

Section II

Modern History and Law, Geography, Economics, Philosophy, Universities and Education

The United Kingdom stands first in this section; next come the British Isles volume of the Oxford Survey, books on English Law and on the history of Great Britain and Ireland; before the Conquest, from the Conquest to the Tudor accession in 1485, Tudor and Stuart 1485-1714, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. English Ecclesiastical history is included, and the contents of a large nineteenth-century collection of histories and documents and authorities (of which not many copies remain) are fully set out; a similar collection of the English divines will be found in a later section (pp. 452-5), along with modern homiletic works. The British Dominions beyond the Seas occupy pages 72-84. The list is enriched by the Imperial Gazetteer of India, published for the Secretary of State for India in Council, and many other books upon Indian history and government.

European History (pp. 85-95) ranges from elaborate and classical editions, first published many years ago, to Mr. George Young's immense collection of Ottoman Law (in French). Books on Military History follow.

The United States of America (pp. 96-102) are the subject of a number of books produced in the American Universities.

Geography (pp. 103-9) contains new editions of the text-books and monographs originally designed by Mr. and Mrs. Herbertson; the Oxford Wall Maps ; and Atlases at very low prices. Books dealing with Anthropology will be found on p. 110.

International Law and Economics (pp. 111-20) includes several recent books on Forestry, some American studies of Commerce, and the two large series of International Law, and of History and Economics, of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Political Science and Philosophy (pp. 121-28 a) presents a considerable list of classical and contemporary works.

Law. A brief list of books on law is given on pp. 128 b-f.

Universities and Education has been made a separate section, in view of the great number of books upon Oxford and other Universities.
