This Series, begun in 1898 and now containing seventy-nine volumes, gradually increased its circulation until, just before the war, its low price was made the subject of serious remonstrance from Germany itself. It has been found that well-printed and scholarly texts are a valuable instrument of education; volumes purchased at school can be added to at the University, and so form a small library of literature rather than a casual shelf-full of portions set for examinations. In point of scholarship the main principle upon which the texts are constructed is well known. They are intended to represent the facts of the tradition rather than the emendations of editors, and the principle has approved itself in practice to some who were at first inclined to plead that in hard places something that might serve' should be supplied. But its adoption has imposed great labour upon many of the editors. To mention only five-the extensive collations by Mr. Allen of the MSS. of Homer, the very fertile investigations by Mr. Clark and Sir W. Peterson of the history of the MSS. of Cicero, give their editions a new value which has been ungrudgingly recognized by critics at home and abroad; the Plautus of Professor Lindsay is the first complete text of the author issued in England since Valpy's ex editione Gronovii'; in completing his Plato, Professor Burnet has accomplished a task more than once essayed, but never performed in any country, since Stallbaum's edition. 6 The table on the following two pages shows the price of each volume (A) in paper covers, uncut, (B) in limp cloth, and (C) on India paper. Prices for interleaved copies will be supplied on application. India paper copies can be had in smooth persian; the complete set on India paper occupies less than two feet of shelf room.
