3 For sure as summer suns have set,

And sure as wintry storms descend, Thy lamp of life shall set in night, And all thy worldly prospects end.

4 Live then to God; for thus alone

Calm thou canst meet the latest hour; And wait content each change that comes, "Till time itself shall be no more.

HYMN 129. P. M.

God unsearchable.

1 SHALL foolish, weak, short-sighted man
Beyond archangels go,
The great almighty God explain,
Or to perfection know?
His attributes divinely soar
Above the creature's sight,
And prostrate seraphim adore
The glorious Infinite.

2 Jehovah's everlasting days
They cannot uumber'd be,
Incomprehensible the space
Of thine immensity:

Thy wisdom's depths by reason's line
In vain we strive to sound,

Or stretch our laboring thought t' assign
Omnipotence a bound.

3 The brightness of thy glories leaves
Description far below,

Nor man, nor angel's heart conceives
How deep thy mercies flow:
Thy love is most unsearchable,
And dazzles all above;

They gaze, but cannot count or tell
The treasures of thy love!

HYMN 130. c. M.

The deceitfulness of sin.

1 SIN has a thousand treacherous arts
To practice on the mind;
With flattering looks she tempts our hearts,
But leaves a sting behind.

2 With names of virtue she deceives
The aged and the young;

And while the heedless wretch believes,
She makes his fetters strong.

3 She pleads for all the joys she brings,
And gives a fair pretence;

But cheats the soul of heavenly things,
And chains it down to sense.

4 So on a tree divinely fair

Grew the forbidden food;

Our mother took the poison there,

And tainted all her blood.

HYMN 131. c. M.

The Pilgrim's Song.

1 SING, ye redeemed of the Lord,
Your great Deliverer sing;
Pilgrims, for Zion's city bound,
Be joyful in your king.

2 See the fair way his hand hath made,
How peaceful and how plain;
The simplest traveller shall not err,
Nor seek the road in vain.

3 No ravening lion shall destroy,
Nor lurking serpent wound;
Safety, support, and heavenly joy,
Through all the way are found.

4 A hand divine shall lead you on,
Along the blissful road;

"Till to the sacred mount ye rise,
And city of your God.

5 There garlands of immortal joy,
Shall bloom on every head;

While pain, and sorrow, and distress,
Like shadows all are fled.

6 Proceed in your Redeemer's strength, Pursue his footsteps still:

And let the prospect cheer your eyes,
While you ascend the hill.

HYMN 132. L. M.

For Good Friday "Behold the Man."

1 SINNERS! "behold the Man" who died,
Behold your Saviour crucified;
Behold him bleeding on the cross;
Behold him sacrificed for us!

2 Trace him, ye careless sinners! through
The grief and shame He bore for you,
Until you see him pierced and slain,
And then by faith" behold the Man."
3 He bowed beneath affliction's rod,
Fulfilling all the law of God;

His guiltless soul was full of woe; "Behold the Man" who died for you! 4 O Saviour! such thy torments were! In agonies beyond compare, Exceeding far all mortal woe: How great his love who died for you!

HYMN 133. P. M.

"Glory to God in the highest."

1 SONGS of praise the angels sang,
Heaven with hallelujahs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun;
When He spake, and it was done;
Songs of praise awoke the morn
When the Prince of Peace was born;
Songs of praise arose, when He
Captive led captivity.

2 Heaven and earth must pass away,
Songs of praise shall crown that day;
God will make new heavens and earth,
Songs of praise shall hail their birth;
And shall man alone be dumb,
'Till that glorious kingdom come?
No-the Church delights to raise
Psalms and hymns, and songs of praise.

3 Saints below! with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above:
Borne upon the latest breath
Songs of praise shall conquer death;
Then amidst eternal joy,

Songs of praise your powers employ.

HYMN 134. P. M.

Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.

1 SONS of men behold from far,
Hail the long-expected star!
Jacob's star, that gilds the night,
Guides bewildered nature right.

2 Mild it shines on all beneath,
Piercing through the shades of death,
Scattering error's wide-spread night,
Kindling darkness into light.
