HYMN 96. L. M.

The rest of the Sabbath.

1 LORD of the Sabbath! hear us pray, In this thy house, on this thy day, Accept, as grateful sacrifice,

The songs which from thy temple rise.

1 Now met to pray, and bless thy name,
Whose mercies flow each day the same,
Whose kind compassions never cease;
We seek instruction, pardon, peace.

3 Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love,
But there's a nobler rest above;
O that we might that rest attain,
From sin, from sorrow, and from pain!

4 In thy blest kingdom we shall be,
From every mortal trouble free;
No sighs shall mingle with the songs
Resounding from immortal tongues.

5 No rude alarms of raging foes,
No cares to break the long repose,
No midnight shade, no clouded sun,
But sacred, high, eternal noon.

6 O long-expected day, begin!
Dawn on this world of woe and sin;
Fain would we leave this weary road,
And sleep in death, to rest in God.

[blocks in formation]

HYMN 97. C. M.

Christ the source of eternal life.

1 LORD! should we leave thy hallowed feet,
To whom could we repair?
Where else such holy comforts meet,
As spring eternal there?

2 Thy kindness called us into life;
And all the good we know,
Each present comfort, future hope
Thy liberal hands bestow.

3 And endless joys 'tis thine to give,
And undecaying peace;

For Thou cans't teach us so to live,
That life shall never cease.

4 Thou only canst the cheering words
Of endless life supply;
Anointed of the Lord of lords!
The Son of God most high!

HYMN 98. P. M.

For deliverance from all sin and wickedness.

1 LORD! whose love in power excelling,
Washed the leper's stain away,
Jesus! from thy heavenly dwelling
Hear us, help us when we pray.
2 From defiling vice and folly,
From infuriate passion's rage,
Evil thoughts, and hopes unholy,
Heedless youth, and selfish age;

3 From the lusts whose deep pollutions
Adam's ancient taint disclose,
From the Tempter's dark intrusions,
Restless doubt, and blind repose;

4 From the miser's cursed treasure,
From the drunkard's jest obscene,
From the world, its pomp and pleasure,
Jesus! Master ! make us clean.

HYMN 99. P. M.

Divine love.

1 LovE divine ! all love excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down!
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown;
Jesus! Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,

Enter every longing heart.

2 Breathe, O breathe thy loving spirit Into every troubled breast!

Let us all in Thee inherit,

Let us find thy promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning,
And a present Saviour be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty !

3 Finish, Lord! thy new creation, Pure in spirit may we be; May we see our soul's salvation Perfectly secured by Thee! Changed from glory into glory, "Till in heaven we take our place, 'Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

HYMN 100. P. M.

Prayer for grace.

1 LORD! if Thou thy grace impart,
Poor in spirit, meek in heart,
I shall, as my Master be,
Rooted in humility.

2 Simple, teachable, and mild,
Changed into a little child;

Pleased with all the Lord provides,
Weaned from all the world besides.

3 Father fix my soul on Thee,
Every evil let me flee,

Nothing want beneath, above,
Happy always in thy love.

4 0 that all may seek and find
Every good in Jesus joined !
Him let Christians still adore,
Trust, and praise him evermore.

HYMN 101. L. M.

For Christian Missionaries.

1 MARKED as the purpose of the skies,
This promise meets our anxious eyes,
That heathen worlds the Lord shall know,
And, warmed with faith, each bosom glow.
2 E'en now the hallowed scenes appear,
E'en now unfolds the promised year;
Lo! distant shores thy heralds trace,
And bear the tidings of thy grace.

3 'Midst burning climes, or frozen plains,
Where heathen darkness brooding reigns,
Lord! mark their steps, their fears subdue,
And nerve their arm, and clear their view.
4 When worn by toil, their spirits fail,
Bid them the glorious future hail;
Bid them the crown of life survey,
And onward urge their conquering way.

HYMN 102. P. M.

Concluding Hymn.

MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour,
And the Father's boundless love,
With the Holy Spirit's favour,

Rest upon us from above.

Thus may we abide in union

With each other and the Lord,
And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.
