3 The graves of all his saints he blest,
And softened every bed;

Where should the dying members rest,
But with the dying Head?

4 Thence he arose, ascending high,
And showed our feet the way;
Up to the Lord our flesh shall fly
At the great rising day.

5 Then let the last, loud trumpet sound,
And bid our kindred rise;
Awake, ye nations under ground;
Ye saints, ascend the skies.

MONTGOMERY.

On the Death of an aged Minister.

1 SERVANT of God, well done!
Rest from thy loved employ ;
The battle fought, the victory won,
Enter thy Master's joy.

2 The voice of midnight came;
He started up to hear:

A mortal arrow pierced his frame;
He fell, but felt no fear.

3 Tranquil amidst alarms,

It found him on the field,

A veteran slumbering on his arms,
Beneath his red-cross shield.

4 The pains of death are past;
Labor and sorrow cease;

And, life's long warfare closed at last,
His soul is found in peace.

5 Soldier of Christ, well done!
Praise be thy new employ ;
And, while eternal ages run,
Rest in thy Savior's joy.

DODDRIDGE.

Support under the Loss of Ministers.

1 NOW let our mourning hearts revive, And all our tears be dry;

Why should those eyes be drowned in grief, Which view a Savior nigh?

2 What though the arm of conquering death Does God's own house invade?

What though the prophet and the priest
Be numbered with the dead?

3 Though earthly shepherds dwell in dust,
The aged and the young,

The watchful eye in darkness closed,
And mute the instructive tongue ;·

4 The eternal Shepherd still survives,
New comfort to impart;

His eye still guides us, and his voice
Still animates our heart.

5 "Lo, I am with you," saith the Lord;
"My church shall safe abide;
For I will ne'er forsake my own,
Whose souls in me confide."

DODDRIDGE.

The Gospel Treasure in earthen Vessels.

1 HOW rich thy bounty, King of kings!
Thy favors, how divine!

The blessings which thy gospel brings,
How splendidly they shine!

2 Gold is but dross, and gems but toys,
Should gold and gems compare ;
How mean, when set against those joys,
Thy poorest servants share!

3 Yet all these treasures of thy grace
Are lodged in urns of clay;
And the weak sons of mortal race
The immortal gifts convey.

4 Feebly they lisp thy glories forth;
Yet grace the victory gives;

Quickly they moulder back to earth;
Yet still thy gospel lives.

5 Such wonders Power divine effects;
Such trophies God can raise ;
His hand from crumbling dust erects
Long monuments of praise.

[blocks in formation]

1 LORD, in the morning thou shalt hear
My voice ascending high;

To thee will I direct my prayer,

To thee lift up mine eye.

2 Thou art a God before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand;

Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight,
Nor dwell at thy right hand.

3 But to thy house will I resort,
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thine holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

4 O, may thy Spirit guide my feet
In ways of righteousness,
Make every path of duty straight
And plain before my face.

5 The men that love and fear thy name
Shall see their hopes fulfilled;
The mighty God will compass them
With favor as a shield.

A Morning Psalm. Ps. 3.

WATTS.

1 TIRED with the burdens of the day, To thee I raised an evening cry; Thou heard'st when I began to pray, And thine almighty help was nigh. 2 Supported by thine heavenly aid,

I laid me down, and slept secure ;
Not death should make my heart afraid,
Though I should wake and rise no more.
3 But God sustained me all the night;
Salvation doth to God belong;

He raised my head to see the light,
And make his praise my morning song.

Morning Hymn.

GENTLEMAN'S MAG.

1 ON thee each morning, O my God,
My waking thoughts attend;
In thee are founded all my hopes;
In thee my wishes end.

2 My soul, in pleasing wonder lost,
Thy boundless love surveys;

And, fired with grateful zeal, prepares
A sacrifice of praise.

3 God leads me through the maze of sleep,
And brings me safe to light;
And, with the same paternal care,
Conducts my steps till night.
