Written in Scripture style by Dr. Franklin about 1769, while residing in London as agent of some of the Colonies. Privately printed by Franklin, at his private press at Passy, near Paris, about 1780. 8vo. Lent by Henry Stevens, Esq. This is one of the original single leaves which Franklin used to insert in his Bible at the end of Genesis, and read to his friend when they were discussing toleration and persecution. He first gave a copy of it to Lord Kames in 1769, who had asked Franklin for whatever he had published. Though then probably in manuscript, Lord Kames first printed it in his "Sketches" in 1774, greatly to the annoyance of the Doctor, because it spoilt his little joke. This copy is much worn and is slightly imperfect, but it is believed to be the only genuine copy known, it having long been used by Franklin himself. The reader is said to have had a doubt about a comma, and on sending to the proper authority to inquire, the answer came back that the comma was to remain. On this message being sent up, the foreman, finding the two words written in pencil in the margin, took out the comma and put in the words, to remain, which fortunately happened neither to make sense or nonsense. The passage was in Gal. iv. 29. "Persecuted him that was born after the Spirit to remain even so it is now," for "Spirit, even so it is now.'
