THE LIFE AND TIMES OF PIEBALD Piebald is a laboratory mouse but he doesn't know that. His Da escaped from the lab and he thinks he went to the City to find his relatives. Piebald yearns to be free like his Da and makes plans to escape and join his Da in the City. His escape plan worked and he ended up in the Forrest. A wild mouse named Agouti invites him to spend the winter in his home and befriends Piebald. Agouti becomes a true friend and teaches Piebald about the dangers of the Forrest. Spring comes and Piebald leaves for the City. Several animals befriend him and take him into their homes. Next, he finds himself floundering in icy cold water. He manages to climb onto a branch that had fallen in the water and he crawls back on dry ground soaked to the skin. He hears the voices of children. He hides under leaves because he fears the children will kill him. The children find him and they make Piebald their pet mouse. The children take Piebald to their home in the City and plead with their mother and father to let them keep Piebald. Next door are Mr. Agouti's City relatives and where he hopes his Da is living. Piebald is united with his Da who was seriously injured by black cat but was now recovering from the attack. Piebald had boasted many times about his physical abilities. He eventually came to realize that it was the Creator who made it possible for him to survive the dangers of the Forrest and find his Da.
