Teacher Marcellus is with him. On which side will you place

him?

Pupil-On the left (L.).

Teacher-Do you mean the extreme right and left?

Pupil No sir; just a little to the right and left of centre.

Teacher-Be a little more explicit.

Pupil-Bernardo would be on the right between the centre and extreme right. Marcellus between centre and extreme left.

[blocks in formation]

Teacher-Hamlet enters upon the scene. From which side will he enter, and what position will he take on the stage?

Pupil-Hamlet enters from right (R.) advancing with his left foot, stops centre with left foot in advance, makes a half turn, and faces front.

Teacher-Makes a half turn in what direction?

Pupil-To the right (R.). He will then be between Bernardo and Marcellus centre (C.).

Teacher-Would it be good form for all of them to be on a direct line from right to left?

Pupil No sir. Hamlet would be just a little up stage, with Bernardo and Marcellus below, right and left.

TWELFTH LESSON

We will take a Biblical story, and arrange it in dramatic form. All to be done according to the method we have been studying. THE STORY

Selected from First Samuel, 17th Chapter, first to eleventh

verses.

Teacher-What is the first thing to do?

Pupil-Read the chapter in the same spirit it was written.

Teacher-What spirit?

Pupil-Being a story from the Word of God, it should be read with the spirit of God.

Teacher-Did God write the book?

Pupil-The writers of the Books of the Bible were men inspired

of God, which to my mind is the same as if God Himself had written them.

Teacher-You are quite right, the Bible being an inspired book, the Author of it is God, and the spirit that runs through from Genesis to Revelations is that of God.

In reading or studying any book, play or poem, what did I request of you?

Pupil To make notes on the work, look them up, and become familiar with the Author, the spirit, time and place, etc.

Teacher-About what time was this historical incident?
Pupil B. C. 1063.

Teacher-The place and location?

Pupil-At Shochoh, and was pitched between Shochoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim-belonging to Judah.

A rough hilly country near to, but probably in the neighorhood of Bethlehem.

Teacher-What is the meaning of the word "Shochoh"?

Pupil-A hedge.

Teacher-Azekah?

Pupil-Dug over.

Teacher-Ephes-dammim?

Pupil-Boundary of blood.

Teacher-We now have the time and the place, and the meaning of words that are used.

We will now look up the characters of this historical drama. Who are they?

Pupil-Saul, Goliath, David. The army of the Philistines, and that of the Israelites.

Teacher-Where was Saul and his army of the Israelites gathered together?

Pupil-By the valley of Elah.

Teacher-Where was this valley?

Pupil-About fourteen miles southwest of Jerusalem, and about twelve miles from Bethlehem.

Teacher-Sketch the scene, then as you move the characters from place to place, mark same.

Take special note whether they are sitting, kneeling, walking, etc.

[blocks in formation]

With a pencil, and a drawing of this kind, I can mark the movement of each character, or body of characters during the action,

Teacher-The first character we will look up is "Saul." To be able to give an intelligent portrayal of this character, it is essential for us to know something about him.

In making our research, what do we find?

Pupil-A man whose sin had troubled his soul and his kingdom.
Teacher-What is the meaning of the name "Saul"?
Pupil-"Asked for." He was king of Israel, his parentage, an-
nointing by Samuel, prophesying, and ackonwledgment as king.
He was possessed by an evil spirit and was quieted by
David.

He then seeks to kill David, and pursues him.

He slays a priest for succoring David.

He visits the Witch of Endor.

His ruin and suicide. His posterity.

Teacher-Where did you gain this knowledge?

Pupil-First Samuel, 9-10, 14, 31-16, 14-15, 23; 18, 5; 18, 10, 2023-26, 22-9; 28-7, 28-15-31.

First Chronicles 10-8-33.

Teacher-The Giant, Goliath; what do you know of him?

Pupil-He was known as the champion of the army of the Philistines.

Teacher-What is the definition of "Gath" and "Goliath?

Pupil-Gath means "Winepress," one of the five cities of the Philistines. "Goliath" means Great.

Teacher-What was the size of Goliath?

Pupil-Eleven feet, ten inches tall. He was clothed in armor of mail, weighing about one hundred and fifty pounds, with greaves of plates of brass made for the shin.

He carried a shield and sword and a beam with a spear's head weighing six hundred sheckels of iron, in our weight, about eighteen pounds.
