NOTICE.

THE Publisher of the only American edition of the WORKS OF ISAAC BARROW, having now completed the volumes, solicits the attention of Theologians and other scholars to the Sermons and Treatises of one of the most erudite Authors of the seventeenth century.

Two standard editions have been recently issued in Britainone from the University Press at Oxford; and the other at Edinburgh. Both of them were carefully collated for this republication; and all the articles that either of them contained have been inserted; with a Synopsis of the "Treatise on the Pope's Supremacy."

The Oxford edition is deficient in the biography of the Author; which memorial is much enlarged in the copy published at Edinburgh. All that is novel in the latter narrative has been appended to the other unsatisfactory portraiture; with which, some other circumstances, ascertained by Mr. Hughes, have also been incorporated. The history of Barrow now detailed in the first volume of this edition of his Works forms therefore the most extensive Memoir of that learned Casuist and Mathematician, which yet has been offered, in connection with his writings, to the Student who peruses his masterly disquisitions. The OPUSCULA THEOLOGICA, ORATIONES, and POEMATA, in the Greek and Latin languages, although usually omitted in other reprints of Barrow's works, are included in the third volume of this edition; and will afford a rich intellectual repast for the Linguist. Thus all the literary productions of the Author, except only his mathematical and scientific dissertations, are now collected.
