Cambridge and London:
This Essay would have been published sooner had it not been thought advisable to leave out a considerable part of the original MS. Some time has been spent in endeavouring to effect the alterations without injury to the harmony of the whole, and the Author hopes that where he may appear not to have been so successful in doing so as he could have wished, he may plead the nature of the task in exculpation of its apparent incompleteness.
