2 Arise, O Lord; stretch forth thine arm,
Nor let the wicked say;

"Your God regards not what we do,-
He never will repay."

3 Thou, Lord, hast seen;-thou wilt requite;Thou art for ever King;

We still commend our cause to thee;
Thou wilt deliv'rance bring.

4 Thou wilt the humble suppliants hear,
That to thy throne repair;

Thou wilt prepare their hearts to pray,
And then accept the prayer.

5 'Tis thine the arm of pride to break,
And make the godless bow:
Thou art the Saviour of the weak,
The orphan's father Thou!

PSALM 11.

The omniscience and dealings of God.

1 THE Lord in heaven has fix'd his throne,
His eye surveys the world below;
To him all mortal things are known,
His eyelids search our spirits through.

2 If he afflicts his saints so far,

Το

prove their love, and try their grace, What may the bold transgressors fear! His very soul abhors their ways.

3 His wrath will on the wicked rain

Tempests of brimstone, fire, and death,
Such as he kindled on the plain
Of Sodom with his angry breath.

4 His saints the righteous Lord approves,
In them he places his delight;

The humble and sincere he loves,

And guides them to the realms of light.

PSALM 12.

The church, amidst the decrease of piety, and the increase of corruption, reposes on the word of God.

1 WHEN godly men decrease, O Lord,
Do thou my cause defend';
Degen'rate times can few afford,
Who will the truth befriend.

2 Yet while their smooth deceits abound,
They cannot prosper long;

God will arise, and will confound
The proud and boastful tongue..
3 The word of God shall still abide,
And void of falsehood be;
As is the silver, seven times tried,
From drossy mixture free.

4 The promise of thy aiding grace
Shall reach its purpos'd end;
Thy servants from the faithless race
Thou ever wilt defend.

PSALM 13.

The distressed and desponding believer animated by the prayer of faith.

1 HOW long wilt thou forget me, Lord!
Must I for ever mourn?

How long wilt thou withdraw from me-
Oh! never to return?

2 How long shall sorrow wring my heart,
And dark despondence reign?
The foe rejoice at my complaint,
And triumph o'er my pain?

3 O hear! and to my longing eyes
Restore thy wonted light;

Save me from death; lest watchful foes
Should at my fall delight.

4 I place my never-failing trust
Beneath thy mercy's wing;
I'll triumph in thy saving health,
And all thy bounty sing.

PSALM 14.

The folly, fruits, and consequences of atheism. 1 THE fool would in his heart suppose That GOD is but a name;

Their deeds the sad mistake disclose,
For virtue they disclaim.

2 The Lord look'd down from heaven's high tower
The sons of men to view;
To see if any own'd his power,
Or truth and justice knew.

3 He saw that all were gone aside,
Degen'rate grown, and base;
None takes religion for his guide
Of all the sinful race.

4 But guilt will fill their souls with fear,
When wrath divine o'ertakes!
But God is to the righteous near,
And them he ne'er forsakes.
PSALM 15.

The character of a citizen of Zion.

1 LORD, whom wilt thou admit to dwell
Thy hallow'd courts among?

The man, who thinks the simple truth,·
And speaks it with his tongue;-

2 Who no malicious slander spreads
His neighbour to debase;-

Who honours them that fear the Lord
But flees the godless race;—

3 Whose word, as faithful as his oath
The world may safely trust;

Who to his loss the promise giv'n
Performs, severely just;—

4 Who deals not in unlawful gain;—
Whose hand from bribes is pure;-
Who scorns the innocent to harm;—
THAT MAN shall stand secure.

PSALM 16.

Messiah in his PRIESTLY character (Acts ii. 25; xiii. 35.) de-
clares, 1. His trust in God, and good will to his people.
1 ALMIGHTY God, preserve my soul,
I trust thy arm divine;

My stedfast faith, thou Lord of all,
Delights to call thee mine.

2 My goodness all proceeds from thee,
And I thy saints will own;

In them, O Lord, will I delight,
To them my love be shewn.

3 How shall their sorrows multiply,
Who other Saviours choose!

Christ will their off'rings ne'er present,
His lips their names refuse.

2. Messiah's hope even amidst his sufferings.
4 THE Lord, of boundless power and grace,
My heritage remains;

His fulness shall my cup supply,

His arm my lot maintains.

5 Messiah's lot, by Thee assign'd,
In beauty doth excel;

And goodly is the wide domain
Where he is wont to dwell.

6 Therefore my soul shall bless the Lord,
Whose promise gives me light;
And counsel to my heart affords
In sorrow's dismal night.

7 I see the Lord for ever nigh,
And trust him above all;

For he doth stand at my right hand,
Therefore I shall not fall.

3. Messiah's expectation of a glorious resurrection. 8 TRUSTING in Thee, my heart is glad, My glory does rejoice;

My flesh shall rest in hope to rise
Wak'd by thy quickening voice.

9 Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell
Because thou lovest me;
Nor wilt thou let thy Holy One
In death corruption see.

10 Thou wilt the paths of life display,
And to thy presence lead;
For pleasures are at thy right hand
And joys that never fade.
PSALM 17.

Prayer for defence against Satan and the world. 1 THOU dost attend th' unfeign'd prayer, By faithful saints addrest;

Most righteous Lord, incline thine ear,
To my sincere request.

2 Thy wondrous loving-kindness shew,
From danger set me free;
O thou that savest all thy saints
That put their trust in thee.

3 O keep me in thy tend❜rest care,
And with thy wing surround;

For wicked men, thy scourge and sword,
Encompass me around.

4 Preserve me, Lord, from worldly men,
Who choose their lot below;

Who, filled with earthly good, desire
No other bliss to know.

They whose conversation is in heaven," will be satisfied when they awake in the divine likeness.

5 WHAT sinners value I resign;
Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine;
I shall behold thy blissful face,
And stand complete in righteousness.
