other a publican. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Josh. xxiv. 14. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise : be thankful unto him, and bless his name. Rom. i. 21. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? Eccles. v. 1, 2. Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God; For God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. 1 Cor. xiii. 13. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. Rev. iii. 19. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore and repent.

SECTION V.

Prov. i. 7. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov. xv. 14. The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness. Eccles. xii. 13. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Acts xvii. 16, 17. And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. Deut. vii. 5. But thus shall ye deal with them, ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their gruven images with fire. 1 Tim. v. 22. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. 1 Tim. iii. 2. 7—9. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach: Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach, and the snare of the devil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not

given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. Tit. i. 5, 6. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly. Prov. xxii. 6. Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Prov. xix. 2. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars for ever and ever. Jam. v. 19, 20. SECTION VI.

Deut. xxvii. 15. Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen. 2 Kings xvii. 16-18. And they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worship

ped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. Deut. xii. 30-32. Take heed to thyself, that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God; for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters have they burnt in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. Col. ii. 21–23. (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using,) after the commandments and doctrines of men ; Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in willworship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. Deut. iv. 2. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you. neither shall you diminish aught from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. Psal. cvi. 36—38. And they served their idols ; which were a snare unto them. Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons, and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. Matt. xv. 3-6. 9. But he answered and said unto them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or

his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Col. ii. 8. (See preceding chapter.) Acts xvii. 29. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. Rom. i. 21-25. Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was darkened: Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into un image made like to corruptible man, and to birds and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 1 Kings xi, 33. Because they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon; and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father. Howbeit, then when ye knew not God, ye unto them which by nature are no gods. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, not serve thy gods, nor worship thy golden image which thou hast set up. Exod. xxxii, 8. They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. Deut. iv. 15-19. Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves, (for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire,) Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you
