Rom. v.

8,9.

Secondly, This Jefus hath not only revealed, but alfo procured, the way of Salvation; not only delivered it to us, but also wrought it out for us: and so Johniii. 17. God fent his Son into the world, that the world through him might be faved. We were all concluded under fin, and, being the wages of fin is death, we were obliged to eternal punishment, from which it was impoffible to be freed, except the fin were firft reHeb. ix. 22, mitted. Now this is the conftant rule, that without fhedding of blood is no remiffion. It was therefore neceflary that Chrift should appear to put away fin by the Mat. xxvi. facrifice of himself. And fo he did, for he shed his blood for many, for the remiffion of fins, as himself profeffeth in the facramental institution: he bare our fins in his own body on the tree, as St. Peter speaks; and fo Col. i. 14. in him we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of fins. And if while we were yet finners, "Chrift died for us; much more then, being now juftified by his blood, we fhall be faved from wrath by him. Again, we were all enemies unto God, and having offended him, there was no poffible way of Salvation, but by being reconciled to him. If then we afk the queftion, as once the Philiftines did concerning David, Sam. xxix, Wherewith fhould we reconcile ourselves unto our Mafter? we have no other name to answer it but Jefus. 2 Cor. v. For God was in Chrift reconciling the world unto himfelf, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them. And as under the Law the blood of the fin-offering was brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place; fo it pleased the Father through the Son, having made peace by the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself. And thus it comes to pafs, that us who were enemies in our mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death. And upon this reconciliation of our perfons muft neceffarily follow Rom. v. 10. the Salvation of our Souls. For if when we were

enemies, we were reconciled unto God by the death of his Son much more being reconciled, we shall be faved by

his life. Furthermore, we were all at first enslaved by fin, and brought into captivity by Satan, neither was there any poffibility of efcape but by way of Redemption. Now it was the Law of Mofes, that if any were able he might redeem himself: but this to Lev, xxv. us was impoffible, because abfolute obedience in all 49. our actions is due unto God, and therefore no act of ours can make any fatisfaction for the leaft offence. Another law gave yet more liberty, that he which was fold might be redeemed again; one of his Lev. xxv. brethren might redeem him. But this in refpect of all 48. the mere fons of men was equally impoffible, becaufe they were all under the fame captivity. Nor could they fatisfy for others, who were wholly unable to redeem themselves. Wherefore there was no other brother, but that Son of Man which is the Son of God, who was like unto us in all things, fin only excepted, which could work this redemption for us. And what he only could, that he freely did perform. For the Son of Man came to give his life a Matt. xx. ranfom for many and as he came to give, fo he gave 1 Tim.ii. 6. bimfelf a ransom for all. So that in him we have re- Eph. i. 7. demption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins. For we are bought with a price: for we are redeemed, not 1 Cor. vii. with corruptible things, as filver and gold; but with Pet. i. the precious blood of Chrift, as of a lamb without ble- 18,19. mifh and without fpot. He then which hath obtained for us remiffion of fins, he who through himself hath reconciled us unto God, he who hath given. himself as a ranfom to redeem us, he who hath thus wrought out the way of Salvation for us, must neceffarily have a fecond and a far higher right unto the name of Jesus, unto the title of our Saviour.

Thirdly, Befide the promulging and procuring, there is yet a farther act, which is, conferring of Salvation on us. All which we mentioned before was wrought by virtue of his death, and his appearance in the Holy of Holics: but we muft ftill believe, he is able alfo to fave them to the uttermoft that Heb. vii.

come unto God by him, feeing he ever liveth to make interceffion for them. For now being fet down at the right hand of God, he hath received all power both in Heaven and Earth; and the end of this power which he hath received is, to confer Salvation upon those which believe in him. For the Father gave John xvii. the Son this power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as he hath given him; that he should raise our bodies out of the duft, and cause our corruptible to put on incorruption, and our mortal to put on immortality: and upon this power we are to expect Salvation from him. For we must Phil. iii. look for the Saviour, the Lord Jefus Chrift, from heaven, who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to fubdue all things Heb. ix. 28. unto himfelf. And unto them that thus look for him Shall he appear the fecond time, without fin unto Sal

vation. Being then we are all to endeavour that our 1 Cor. v. 5. Spirits may be faved in the day of the Lord Jefus; beActs v. 31. ing St. Peter hath taught us, that God hath exalted Chrift with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour; being the conferring of that upon us which he promised to us, and obtained for us, is the reward of what he suffered; therefore we must acknowledge that the actual giving of Salvation to us is the ultimate and conclufive ground of the title, Saviour.

Thus by the virtue of his precious blood Christ hath obtained remiffion of our fins, by the power of his grace hath taken away the dominion of fin, in the life to come will free us from all poffibility of finning, and utterly abolish death the wages of fin: Matt. i. 21. wherefore well faid the Angel of the Lord, Thou fhalt call his name Jefus, for he shall save his people Luke i. 69. from their fins; well did Zacharias call him an horn of Salvation; Simeon, the Salvation of God; St. Paul Heb. v. 9. the captain and author of eternal Salvation; St. Peter, Heb. ii. 10. a Prince and a Saviour, correfpondent to those

Judges

Judges of Ifrael, raised up by God himself to deliver his people from the hands of their enemies, and for that reafon called Saviours. In the time of their Neh. is. 27. trouble, fay the Levites, when they cried unto thee, thou heardeft them from heaven, and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them Saviours, who faved them out of the hand of their enemies.

I.

The correspondency of Jefus unto those temporal Saviours will beft appear if we confider it particularly in Jofhua, who bare that Salvation in his name, and approved it in his actions. For, as the fon of Sirach faith, Jefus the fon of Nave was valiant Ecclus.xlvi. in the wars, and was the fucceffor of Mofes in prophecies, who, according to his name, was made great for the faving of the elect of God. "Although therefore Mofes was truly and really a ruler and deliverer, which is A&tavii. 35. the (x) fame with Saviour; although the rest of the Judges were alfo by their office rulers and deliverers, and therefore ftyled Saviours, as exprefsly Othniel and Ehud are; yet Jofhua, far more particularly and exactly than the reft, is reprefented as a type of our Jefus, and that typical fingularity manifefted in his (y) name. For firft, He it was alone, of all which paffed out of Egypt, who was defigned to lead the children of Ifrael into Canaan, the land of promife flowing with milk and honey. Which land as it was a type of the Heaven of heavens, the inheritance of the Saints, and eternal joys flowing from the right hand of God; fo is the Perfon which brought the Ifraelites into that place of reft (z) a type of him who only can bring us into the prefence of God, and there prepare our manfions for us, and affign them to us, as Jofhua divided the land for an inheritance to the Tribes. Befides, it is farther obfervable, not only what Joshua did, but what Mofes could not do. The hand of Mofes and Aaron brought them out of Egypt, but left them in the wilderness, and could not feat them in Canaan. Jofhua, the fucceffor, only could effect

that in which Mofes failed. Now nothing is more frequent in the phrase of the Holy Ghost, than to take Mofes for the doctrine delivered, or the books written by him, that is, the (a) Law; from whence it followeth, that the death of Mofes and the fucceffion of Joshua prefignified the continuance of the Law till Jefus came, by whom all that believe are juftified from all things, from which we could not be Luke xvi. juftified by the Law of Mofes. The Law and the Prophets were until John: fince that the kingdom of God is preached. Mofes muft die, that Jofhua Rem. . may fucceed. By the deeds of the Law there fhall 20, 21, 22. 110 flesh be justified, (for by the Law is the knowledge of fin;) but the righteousness of God without the Law is manifefted, even the righteoufnefs of God, which is by faith of Jefus Chrift unto all and upon all them that believe. Mofes indeed feems to have taken Joshua Exod. xxiv. With him up into the mount: but if he did,

fure it was to enter the cloud which covered the mount where the glory of the Lord abode: for (b). without Jefus, in whom are hid all the treasures of wifdom and knowledge, there is no looking into the fecrets of heaven, no approaching to the prefence of God. The command of circumcifion was not given unto Mofes, but to Jofhua; nor were the Ifraelites circumcifed in the wildernefs, under the conduct of Mofes and Aaron, but in the land of Joh. v. 2. Canaan, under their Succeffor. For at that time the Lord faid unto foshua, make thee sharp knives, and circumcife again the Children of Ifrael the fecond time. Which fpeaketh (c) Jefus to be the true circumcifer, the author of another circumcifion than that of the Rom. i. 29. flesh commanded by the Law, even the circumcifion of the heart in the spirit, and not in the letter; that Col. ii. 11. which is made without hands, in putting off the body of the fins of the flesh, which is therefore called the circumcifion of Christ.

Exod. xxiv.

Thus if we look unto Joshua as the minifter of Joh. i. 1. Mofes, he is even in that a type of Chrift, the
