Of the scenery of Alem-Tejo no description is attempted, because, though having some fine moun

The noble author of " Portugal and Gallicia" saw a great deal of that province, and in writing of it, states, "My eye ran over the dark wastes of Alem-Tejo, stretching into endless distance; there is a fascination in the gorgeous monotony and universal stillness of the scene, and in the solemn splendour of the never-clouded sun and sky."

Indeed, the description which is given of the grand and comprehensive view of Algarve, from La Foya, the highest point of the Monchique mountains, might tempt the adventurous traveller to wend his way thither, which could be done by going from Figueira dos Cavalleiros (vide Route 41) to

It is somewhat surprising that, in describing a country, abounding in such views as are noticed in this work, Balbi should have made the following remark (vol. i. p. 70):-" On ne jouit d'une vue belle et étendue que sur le sommet de la Serra d'Aire, de Arrabida et de Foya!"
