GENTLEMEN,—I have to thank the College of Physicians for the great honour they have done me in requesting me to deliver two of the scientific lectures this year. In selecting the subject of these lectures, I have adhered to the terms of the invitation of the College to embody in these lectures "some results of my recent studies connected with medical science," more in spirit than in letter, for my studies connected with the subject of the "intimate nature of contagion and infection, and their relation to the prevention and cure of zymotic diseases," have extended over a considerable number of years-in fact, are coeval with my connexion with Corkstreet Fever Hospital. It is scarcely necessary for me to state what immense destruction is continually being produced by contagion, and it is almost impossible to exaggerate the amount of loss in time, money, and life which the prevalence of contagious diseases ⚫ Being the first of two lectures delivered before the King and Queen's College of Physicians on the 4th and 11th of March, 1878.
