we could not overcome our felves upon fuch an Occafion, A. C. wherein we hop'd that our continuing in the Town might 1706. be of fome ufe for the Common Caufe. Your Troops, and thofe of the Queen of Great-Britain, have fhew'd the fame Valour and Firmnes for the Defence of Montjuich and the City, which they expreffed laft Year for the Conqueft thereof. Fort Montjuich, which your Troops and thofe of the Queen took in three Hours time, has held out against the Enemy 22 Days after the opening the Trenches; but the Enemies having afterwards lodged themselves on the Point of the Counterfcarp, and made a fufficient Breach to be mounted, we had reafon to fear, that the Garrison being extreamly fatigu'd and diminish'd, this Place would at last have been forced to yield to the vigorous Attack of the Enemies. The Arrival of the Fleet, and the Land Forces, which came at the fame time, has remov'd that juft Apprehenfion. That fortunate Accident has fill'd us with Foy, and ftruck the Enemy with the utmoft Confternation, who are now obliged to think of making their Retreat, when they actually thought themfelves Mafters of Barcelona. We doubt not but you will receive this great News with Sentiments of Foy and Comfort equal to ours; and while we affure you of the perfect Gratitude we have for your Affiftance, we shall endeavour our utmost to im prove this favourable Opportunity for promoting our Interefts, and thofe of the Common Caufe. Whereupon we pray God to keep you, moft dear and great Friends, in his Holy Protection. Barcelona, May 10. 1706.

Your very good Friend,
CHARLES
