The publishers venture to affirm that in no Bookseller's catalogue will this Gallery be found mentioned; the Duke of Praslin was a connection of the Duke of Choiseul (whose gallery is so well known by the beautifully engraved series of prints), by whose example he was probably animated in the desire to have his own collection of pictures engraved; from some cause or other, unknown, his purpose was never carried out, nor did the series ever appear in the form of a distinct publication; the late Edward Holmes, Esq., director of the prints and drawings at the Manchester Exhibition, had a great desire to obtain a complete set as far as published, and, after some years' research, the volume above cited was the reward of his labours. Portraits of the Marquis and the Duke of Praslin are placed at the commencement of the series.
