the State of New York, and it is hoped that it may yet be returned to the county; Louisa (1742), complete with exception of first will book, 1742-1745; Middlesex (1675), several books of various kinds missing; Northumberland (1648), wills and deeds from about 1670 to 1710 destroyed by fire, records appear to be otherwise complete; Orange (1734), believed to be nearly complete; Prince George (1702), one volume, weighing thirty-two pounds, and containing wills, deeds, etc., 1713–1728, was found in an abandoned camp near Richmond in 1865 and returned to the county; three others only remain, one of orders, 1738-1740, another (a fragment), 1759-60, and a third covering the period 1787-1792. Prince William (1730) suffered greatly during the civil war, but several stolen volumes have been returned, and it is probable that now not more than four or five are missing. Stafford (1666) likewise was badly damaged during the war.
