Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scrip tures for Salvation.

H

OLY Scripture containeth all things neceffary to Salvation: So that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any Man that it fhould be believed as an Article of Faith, or be thought requifite or neceffary to Salvation. In the Name of the holy Scripture, we do understand those canonical Books of the Old and New Teftament, of whose Authority was never any Doubt in the Church.

And the other Books (as Hierome faith) the Church doth read, for Example of Life and Inftruction of Manners, but yet doth not apply them to establish any Doctrine: Such are thefe following:

III. Book of Efdras.
IV. Book of Efdras.
Book of Tobias.
Book of Judith.
Reft of the Book
Hefter.

Book of Wisdom.

Baruch the Prophet.

Song of the three Children.

Story of Sufanna. of Of Bell and the Dragon. Prayer of Manaffes.

Jefus the Son of Sirach.

I. Book of Maccabees.

II. Book of Maccabees.

All the Books of the New Teftament, as they are commonly received, we do receive and account them canonical.

* 2 Tim. iii. 15. From a Child thou haft known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wife unto Salvation, through Faith which is in Chrift Jefus. All Scripture is given by Inspiration of GOD, and is profitable for Doctrine, for Reproof, for Correction, for Inftruction in Righteoufnefs, that the Man of GOD may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good Works.

21. viii. 20. To the Law, and to the Teftimony, if they fpeak not according to this Word, it is because there is no Light in them. Deut. iv. 2. Ye fhall not add to the Word which I command you, neither fhall ye diminish ought from it. Deut. xii. 32. What Thing foever I command you, obferve to do it: Thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. See also Rev. xxii. 18, 19. I teftify unto every one that heareth the Words of the Prophecy of this Book, if any Man fhall add unto these Things, Gop fhall add unto him the Plagues that are written in this Book. And if any Man fhall take away from the Words of the Book of this Prophecy, GOD fhall take away his Part out of the Book of Life, and out of the holy City, and from the Things, which are written in this Book. Matt. xv. 9. In vain do they worship me, teaching for Doctrines the Commandments of Men.

3 For the rest of this Article, I would refer the Reader to that learned Work of Dr. Cofin, Bishop of Durham, called, “A scholastical History of the Canon of the Holy "Scripture, or the certain and indubitate Books thereof,

"as they are received in the Church of England." At the fame time recommending it to the careful Perusal of all who would be well informed therein, especially Perfons in, or defigned for, holy Orders.

ARTICLE VII.

Df the Old Teftament.

HE Old Testament is not contrary to the New; for both in the Old and New Teftament, everlafting Life is offered to Mankind by Chrift, who is the only Mediator between God and Man, 3 being both God and Man; wherefore they are not to be heard, which feign that the old Fathers did look only for tranfitory Promises. 5 Although the Law given from God by Mofes, as touching Ceremonies and Rites, do not bind Christian Men, nor the civil Precepts thereof ought of Neceffity to be received in any Commonwealth: Yet notwithstanding no 7 Chriftian Man whatfoever is free from the Obedience of the Commandments which are called moral.

Heb. i. 1. GOD, who at fundry Times, and in divers Manners, fpake in Time paft unto the Fathers by the Prophets, hath in thefe laft Days fpoken to us by his Son. As iii. 22, 23, 24, 25. Mofes truly faid unto the Fathers, a Prophet fhall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your Brethren, like unto me; him fhall ye hear in all Things whatfoever he fhall fay unto you; and it fhall come to pafs, that every Soul which will not hear that Prophet, fhall be deftroyed from among the People. Yea, and all the Prophets from Samuel, and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of thefe Days. Ye are the Children of the Prophets, - and of the Covenant which Gon made with our Fathers, faying unto Abraham, and in thy Seed fhall all the Kindreds of the Earth be bleffed.-Gal. iii. 16. and his Seed were the Promifes made. He faith not, and to Seeds, as of many, but as of one, and to thy Seed: which is Chrift.-John v. 46, 47. Had ye believed Mofes, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me.

But if

believe not his Writings, how fhould ye believe my Words?-Luke xxiv. 44. Thefe are the Words which I fpake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all Things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Law of Mofes, and in the Prophets, and in the Pfalms concerning me. Then opened he their Understandings, that they might understand the Scriptures.

Heb. xi. 13-17. Thefe all died in Faith, not hav ing received the Promifes, but having feen them afar off, and were perfuaded of them, and embraced them, and confeffed that they were Strangers and Pilgrims on the Earth. For they that fay fuch Things, declare plainly that they feek a Country.-And truly, if they had been mindful of that Country, from whence they came out, they might have had Opportunity to have returned. But now they defire a better Country, that is, an heavenly. Wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: For he hath prepared for them a City.-Ver. 35, Jatter Part, Others were tortured, not accepting Deliverance, that they might obtain a better Refurcation.
