The new capital will have various zones for Government offices, residential areas, light industries, wholesale centre and warehousing areas, public institutions and community features, including schools and shops, which will be located with a balanced outlook for the movement of traffic.

The new site, occupying an area of about 21 square miles, is situated 15 miles to the north of Ahmedabad. Over 150,000 trees have already been planted to prevent erosion.

Mr. H. K. Mewada, chief town planner and architectural adviser, capital project, explaining various aspects of the new city, said the plan had been laid out on the site and construction of a few major roads had started. While the various types of house designs for Government employees had already been finalised the detailed plans for various residential sectors were being prepared.

Mr. Mewada said the water-works was situated two miles upstream from the city. Construction work was under progress for the headworks and filtration plant as well as the main overhead and underground water reservoirs for the city which were situated near the industries zone.

Removal Of Councillor

The Municipal Board of Rajpipla decided at an extraordinary general meeting on January 9 to suspend Mr. Jayantilal Gandhi from the office of chairman of the Public Works Committee.

It recommended to the Gujarat Government that Mr. Gandhi should be removed from the municipal council for "misconduct" in the discharge of his duties.

It also urged the Government to hold an inquiry into the charge of misapplication of funds by Mr. Gandhi and recover the money, if any, from him if it was etablished that he was personally liable for it.

The report of a three-man committee set up on October 24 last year was circulated among the municipal board members.

The members of the committee, Mr. Kantilal Maganlal Pandya, Mr. Chinubhai

Maganlal Kapadia and a former municipal president, Mr. Panalal Nandlal Pandya, had unanimously held that, during his tenure of office as chairman of the water works committee, Mr. Jayantilal Gandhi misued his position, tampered with records and damaged the prestige of the municipality.

Of the 24 members of the civic board, 21 were present. All three resolutions were passed by 18 votes to nil. Three members remained neutral. Mr. Gandhi did not attend.

Civic Honour For Musicians

The Corporation of Madras on January 5 conferred a signal honour on Srimathi M. S. Subbulakshmi by according a civic reception to her on her successful trip abroad, "having served as our cultural ambassador, keeping the flag of fine arts flying aloft and having given a glorious concert in the United Nations. She was presented with a replica of a veena in silver.

Mr. R. Sambandam, Mayor, said Srimathi Subbulakshmi combined in her a "charming personality" and an "enchanting voice". He referred to her talent in acting, the reputation of her inimitable style of rendering music, her melodious and golden voice, chaste Tamil, clarity in singing the compositions and her philanthropy to public causes. The appealing timbre of her voice, serene, full of grace and grandeur always remained flawless he added.

Srimathi Subbulakshmi, in her reply felt that the reception was indeed a tribute by the citizens to a "student of music" and an honour to the most ancient and highly evolved South Indian classical music. If at all she deserved any praise, it was due to the affection of millions of listeners, the vast number of musicians, of Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi, of Rajaji and above all due to the encouragement and support given by her husband, Mr. T. Sadasivam who "is my friend, guru philosopher and guide.
