HE ESSAY on the ANTIQUITY of the IRISH LANGUAGE published in the Year 1772 being out of print, and much inquired after, the Author bestowed part of his leisure in correcting and making additions to it; but being called upon to attend the fervice of his country at this critical period, he left his papers in the hands of a friend to difpofe of as he should think proper. confulting fome learned and judicious friends, they agreed that the Effay thus revised and improved would be a most acceptable prefent to the curious; in compliance with this determination, the Editor now presents it to the Public as the EIGHTH NUMBER of the COLLECTANEA DE REBUS HIBERNICIS, hoping that the unavoidable absence of the Author will be admitted as an excufe for any errors that may appear in it.
