RARE; and excessively curious as containing a complete description of the thieving and swindling population of London at that time, with a Cant Vocabulary and specimens of Slang-dictionaries and Songs, which seem to be partly in Gipsy-speech. Dekker's name does not appear in the book, which is a vivid picture of low and criminal life. 611 DE LOLME (J. L.) 1740-1806. Well known,' we mean, to students and to those who do not think their hours misspent in the perusal of books which rather minister to a devout life than to worldly thoughts and the spirit of pride.

"For Mr. Digby is one of the few writers who convey a moral and a saintly lesson without preaching a sermon; one of the few companions who know how to suggest good and useful thoughts without fatiguing the mind by too constant a strain upon its powers. He is one of those who feel the words of Horace :

Si vis me flere, dolendum est

The portrait engraved by Peter Lombart in 1650 or 1651 is sometimes added to
this volume; a circumstance which has led to the belief that the plate was published with
the book. The absurdity of such a notion will be evident to anyone who considers that
Lombart made his appearance in England for the first time about 1640 and that he was
then probably no more than twenty years of age.

The work contains the first known reference to young Darnley not yet nine years of age, who was rapid in his studies, and with whom Elder seems to have been a tutor. The person to whom the Letter is addressed was Lord Robert Stuart, Bishop of Caithness, Darnley's uncle and afterwards Earl of March.
