PREFACE.

ONLY very few words concerning ourselves and our Treasury are here necessary in reference to the past year. Having been preserved and blessed during its varied months as they swept over our heads, we feel our first duty is to offer our heartfelt thanksgiving to Him who hath crowned the year with His loving-kindnesses and tender mercies.

The many kind words forwarded to us during the last twelve months, by a considerable number of our readers and correspondents, have much cheered us; and we beg them to accept our gratitude for their encouragement and valuable help.

In its distinctive features and principles our Treasury has remained, and will remain, unchanged; and in reviewing the past, we devoutly thank God and take courage.

And now as to our plans and purposes for the coming year. We are much pleased to announce that, in addition to those features which already have so distinctively marked the Treasury, we have made arrangements to review, from time to time, in comprehensive and appreciative articles, independently of our shorter notices, meritorious and striking Works which at all tend to bear on the higher education and spiritual need of teachers, whether in their Sunday-school labours, or in their own sphere of individual self-culture.

There will also appear, at suitable intervals, Sketches of the Lives and Extracts from the Works of notable RELIGIOUS WORTHIES, whether past or present; MEMORABLE PLACES OF SCRIPTURE HISTORY, being topographical descriptions of famous Biblical scenes; Short Essays on BIBLICAL ETYMOLOGY, ANTIQUITIES, and NATURAL HISTORY, helping to the elucidation of Scripture truth. These subjects will be in addition to such as we have hitherto given in the Magazine, rendering it, we trust, yet more attractive and serviceable to the teacher.
