Research Cottrell And Voltas Combat Air

Pollution

In an industrially developing country like ours, the problem of air pollution is assuming menacing proportions. The damage to the inhabitants of large cities and industrial townships far exceeds the cost of employing anti-air pollution measures. On a brief visit to India, Mr. J. E. Schork, President of Research-Cottrell, Inc., U.S.A, voiced his deep concern about the growing pro blem of air pollution all over the world. He emphasised the need for public -awareness and clamour to convince industrie s and the Government to use methods which would prevent air pollution.

Research-Cottrell is the foremost organisation in the United States which designs and manufactures plants and equipment which could be used for collection, for safe disposal, of dust, chemicals, acid mists,

which, if allowed to escape unchecked, will be harmful to public health.

The founder of Research-Cottrell was Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who had a considerable part to play in the development of electrostatic precipitators for industrial applica

It is generally accepted that industrial plants in general and thermal power plants, chemical plants and fertiliser plants, in particular, constitute one of the major sources of air pollution. In view of the increasing awareness of the harmful effects of air pollution by the Government, Municipal authorities and the public at large, it is very desirable that anti-air pollution measures should form an integral part of an industrial plant. The cost of such an equipment varies from project to project

The TISCO Works at Jamshedpur have made liberal use of electrostatic
precipitators where a number of these units have been installed.

depending on the nature of dust/fumes to be collected and each equipment has to be tailor-made to meet a given requirement. It is, however, far better to install this equipment as an integral part of a new project than to leave it to a later date, since, such a course may involve modification to existing plants and the resultant plant down time may make such an installation more expensive.

The principle of electrostatic precipitation is simple. Very briefiy it could be said that it electrostatically attracts dust from the effluent. However, application of this simple principle for industrial use poses a number of designing and engineering problems varying from application to application. A well designed precipitator could absorb as much as 99.99% of dust particles issuing out of exhaust.

Voltas Limited have recently obtained approval and have secured an industrial licence, from the Government of India for

the manufacture of electrostatic precipitators and mechanical dust collectors, in collabora tion with Research-Cottrell. Earlier this year, Vice President, International Operations, Mr. V. W. Copcutt was in India to meet potential clients and to discuss in general the programme of manufacture.

A number of Research-Cottrell dust collection installations are already working in India :

-Tata Power Company, Trombay. -Damodar Valley Corporation, Chandrapura and Durgapur.

-Tata Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Jamshed,
pur.

-West Bengal State Electricity Board,
Durgapur.

-Hindustan Steel Ltd., Durgapur.
-Hindustan Aluminium Co. Ltd., U. P.
-Orient Paper Mills Ltd., M. P.
