wrought out deliverance from death for those that repent of their evils, and believe in him." Now had Justin been of opinion, that Chrift died for every individual of mankind, would he have used fuch limitations and reftrictions when treating of the extent of his fufferings and death? Monfieur Daille indeed cites fome paffages from him as favouring the doctrine of universal redemption; but his firft inftance only proves, that Chrift was born and crucified, UTTER TY YES Twv aveρwπv, for the generation of men, or for mankind; but not that he was born and crucified for every individual of mankind. Justin's fenfe in other places is clear, and his meaning is, that Chrift died for fome of all forts of men; as when speaking of the scarlet thread that Rabab the harlor was directed to bind to her window, he fays, it was "a fymbol of the blood of Chrift, by which are faved the fornicators of old, and unrighteous perfons, ex av Twv evrov, out of all nations, receiving forgiveness of fins, and finning no more." And in another place he thus expreffes himself", "as Jacob ferved Laban for the cattle that were spotted, and of various forms, fo Chrift ferved even to the crois, υπέρ των εκ

παντος γένες ποικιλων και πολυειδων ανθρώπων, for men of every kind, of many and various fhapes, procuring 'em by his blood and the mystery of the crofs. Monfieur Daille's fecond inftance only declares that kind and tender manner in which God fent his Son into the world. His third fets forth Justin's fentiments concerning the Heathens, which will be confider'd in a proper place. And his fourth and laft only fhews, that it is the will of God that all fhould be faved, meaning, that all men fhall be raifed from the dead, against those that deny the do&trine of the refurrection; cr that it is the will of God that some of all forts fhould be faved, referring to the Apoftle's words and fenfe in 1 Tim. ii. 4.

the churches in Pontus, and to the church at Philomelium, as is thought, about the year 169. giving an account of the fufferings of fome martyrs, and particularly of Polycarp, their former bishop; in which they take notice of the ftupidity of fome perfons, who used their intereft to prevent

the Christians having the dead body of Polycarp given them; left leaving their crucified Chrift, they should begin to worship him, being ignorant, fay they, that we can never leave that Chrift, τον υπερ της το παντος κόσμο των σωζομενων σωτηρίας παθοντα, who fuffered for the falvation of the whole world of them that are faved, nor worship any other." This paffage Monfieur Daille thinks makes nothing to the purpose, fince it does not deny that Chrift died for others besides those who are really faved But furely if these pious Chriftians had believed that Chrift died for all men, for them that are faved, and for them that are not faved, they would never have expreffed themselves in this reftrictive manner; but would have chofe to have carried the extent of Chrift's fufferings and death to the utmoft, when they were declaring their great regard for him, and the great benefit of falvation men receive by him. Befides, these words manifeftly show, in what fenfe this very antient church underftood thofe univerfal phrafes, the world, the whole world, and all men, in fcripture, for whom Chrift is faid to give himself and die, and for whofe fins he is faid to be a propitiation; that these defign a certain number of men that are and will be faved. to the verfion of Ruffinus, urged by this author, rendering the paffage thus, Who endured death for the falvation of the whole world, it is not worthy of regard, fince it is an imperfect one, omitting the words, Twy owoμενων. And here I chufe to take notice of a citation made by Monfieur Daille, and after him by Dr. Whitby, out of an epiftle of Polycarp, bishop of this church, at Smyrna, faid to be written A. D. 107. to the Philippians, in which he thus fpeaks concerning Chrift, "who, fays he, will come to judge the quick and the dead, × 70 mμa εκζητήσει ο Θεος απο των απειθεντων αυτω, whole blood God will require of them that believed not in him; from whence they conclude, that according to this antient venerable bifhop, Chrift died for them that perish as well as for those that are faved. It is fomething ftrange, that Monfieur Daille fhould cite a paffage out of an epiftle, the genuineness of which he himself has called in question; and should it appear to be genuine, as it is thought to be by many learned men, it will be of no service to him, or to the Dr. or to the caufe they efpoufed, fince God may be faid to require, as he certainly will require the blood of Chrift of the unbelie

ving Jews who shed it; and indeed of them only who faid, his blood be on us and on our children, without fuppofing that his blood was thed for them; yea, on the contrary it appears, that his blood was not fhed for them, both from their final unbelief, and from its being required of them. And of as little fervice are his citations from Minutius Foelix, Athenagoras, Tatian, and Theophilus of Antioch; fince they only exprefs the patience, goodness, power, and wifdom of God in creation and providence, and his great regard to repenting finners, but not a fyllable of Chrift's dying for men, much less for every individual of mankind.
