Monfieur Daille has cited a paffage from this writer in favour of general redemption, which is this," Let us, fays Clement, look to the blood of Chrift, and fee how precious his blood is to God, which being fhed for our falvation, Tavlı TW 200μω μετανοίας χαριν υπενεγκεν, bath brought the grace of repentance to all the world." But his meaning is evidently this, that the blood of Chrift fhed for the falvation of finners has laid a foundation for the preaching of the doctrine of repentance in all ages of the world; for he goes on to inftance in the preaching of Noah to the old world; of fonab to the Ninevites; and in God's declarations of his regard to repenting finners in the times of Isaiah and Ezekiel, which he clofes with this obfervation, “ πανίας εν τις αγαπητες αυτό βελομένος μετανοίας μεταχειν, God therefore willing that his beloved ones Should partake of repentance." In which he fuggefts, that God's grand defign in having the doctrine of repentance preached in all ages was, that thofe who were the objects

of his love might be brought unto it; which is fo far from militating against, that it is a confirmation of the doctrine of special grace and redemption through the blood of Chrift.

BARNABAS. A. D. 70.

BArnabas was a Levite, of the country of

Cyprus, and a companion of the Apostle Paul; there's an epiftle extant which goes under his name, and is thought to have been written after the deftruction of the temple at Jerufalem, and about A. D. 70. in which he not only fays, that "the Son of God being Lord, and who also thall judge the quick and the dead, επαθεν ινα η πληγή αυτά (worromon nuas, Suffered, that by his ftripes he might quicken us; that he could not fuffer, & un dia nuas, but for us; and that he offered the veffel of the Spirit a facrifice, υπερ των ημετέρων αμαρτιων, for our fins ; but alfo introduces Chrift thus fpeaking of his fufferings, "I fee that I fhall offer my flesh, υπερ αμαρίκων το λαό το καινs, for the fins of the new people; meaning a fpecial and pe

culiar people that should be taken out from among the Gentiles under the New Teftament difpenfation, called a new people, to distinguish them from God's antient people the Jews.

IGNATIUS. A. D. 110.

Gnatius never makes ufe of any general expreffions when he speaks of the fufferings and death of Chrift; but either fays, that he fuffered, υπερ ημων, δι ημας, for us, that we might be faved; or υπες αμερίσων nuwv, for our fins; and fometimes defcribes the perfons he means, as when he says ", that" Jefus Chrift died for us, wa msevoavles εις τον θανατον αυ18, το αποθανειν εκφυγηκε, that believing in his death, you may escape dying." And in another place he fays, that "Jefus is n (av Twv mswv, the life of believers." Monfieur Daille has not attempted to give us one inftance for general redemption out of this writer, nor the former.

JUSTIN. A. D. 150.

Uftin Martyr, in many places of his writings, limits the incarnation, fufferings, death, and facrifice of Chrift, and redemption by him, to certain persons whom he describes by repenting finners, believers, &c. as when he fays, that Chrift "was born according to the will of God the Father, υπες των πιςευόντων ανθρωπων, for men that believe;" that is, in order to procure falvation, and obtain eternal redemption for such persons, as he elsewhere explains it, faying', that he "became man of a virgin, according to the will of the Father, VT υπερ σα Tηρίας των πιςευοντων αυτω, for the faluation of them that believe in him." And in another place", having cited Ifa. xxxiii. 16. Bread fhall be given him, he obferves, "That this is a prophecy concerning that bread which our Chrift hath delivered to us in commemoration of his being embodied, da Tes Tζευοντας εις αυτον, δι' ες κ παθεῖος γεγονε, for the fake of them that believe in him, for whom alfo be became fubject to fufferings." And elsewhere he fays", that the offering of

fine flower for the leper was a figure of the bread of the eucharift which Jefus Christ our Lord hath delivered unto us to do in commemoration of his fufferings; which he endured, υπερ των καθαιρομένων τας ψυχας απο πασης πονηρίας ανθρωπων, for thofe men whofe fouls are purified from all inquity;" and this he fuppofed was done by the blood of Chrift; for more than once explaining that text in Gen. xlix. 11. He washed bis garments in wine, and bis clothes in the blood of grapes, he fays, it "foretold, and manifeftly declared the fufferings which Chrift should endure, δι' αιματος καθαιρον τις πιςεύοντας αυτω, purifying by his blood them that believe in bim." These he often intimates, fhare the benefits of Chrift's blood, fufferings and death; "as, fays he ", the blood of the paffover faved them that were in Egypt, fo the blood of Chrift, τις πιςεύοντας ρύσεται εκ θα vals, delivers from death thofe that believe. In like manner he afferts, that Chrift was an offering or facrifce, υπερ παντων μετα νοειν βελομένων αμαρτωλων, for all finners that are willing to repent." Yea, that aλλγεν δε το θανατ1ε τοις μεταγινώσκεσιν από των φαύλων και πιςεύεσιν αυτω εργάζεται, he has
