ARMISTEAD, J. J., & JEFFERSON, S., Leeds.

AQUARIA AND PISCICULTURAL DEPARTMENT.

A space of 80 feet by 20 in the southern aisle of the Edinburgh Hall is devoted to the illustration of pisciculture and fresh-water aquaria, arranged in two divisions. The first, under the charge of Mr. J. J. Armistead, is devoted to the exhibition of various articles used in fish culture, and of a number of tanks supplied with running water, and stocked mainly with examples of the salmon family. The second division is under the charge of Mr. S. Jefferson, F.C.S., consisting of twenty tanks, &c., stocked with numerous varieties of fresh-water animals and plants. Both divisions are ornamented by rock-work, &c., and the scientific and popular names of the objects shown are appended.

Arranged upon the tables, in the division of which Mr. Jefferson is curator, will be found a specially interesting set of casts of various fish. These are by Mr. Matthew Taylor, sculptor, of this town; the casts of fresh-water fish, including chub, pike, tench, roach, dace, &c., are coloured so perfectly, and the form of each fish is so well retained, that this mode must be esteemed preferable, for museum purposes, to either stuffing or preservation of the real fish in spirits.

Model of apparatus for hatching salmon, trout, char, &c.

"Grilles" used in fish hatching, showing the different kinds used for different fish.

Tin case, in which ova of Salmonidæ have been successfully packed for export and import in large quantities.
