The following is an exact Copy of the REGULATION for the COLLEGE, which, with the concurrence of the Honourable the EAST INDIA COMPANY, the Marquis WELLESLEY has inftituted at Calcutta in August 18co. It is founded on the moft liberal principles; and the plan embraces an extenfive range of fcience and literature. All the polifhed languages, ancient and modern, of Europe as well as of Afia, together with the leading branches of the phyfical and moral fciences, are to be taught a this College; and the moft generous encouragement is held out to men of talents and erudition both in India and in England, to become Candidates for the different Pro fefforfhips. The fchenie refle&is honour on the able and enlightened Statefman with whom it originated; and adds greatly to the other glories which his wife and brilliant adminif tration has already acquired. We hope that the Inftitution itself may excite that emtlation among our youth in India, which it is fo well calculated to inspire, that it may produce that utility which ought to refult from it; and that therefore it may receive from his Majefty's Ministers, as well as the Court of Directors, and particularly from the future Governors of Bengal, that zealous patronage and unremitting attention by which alone fuch a Seminary, fituated at fo great a distance from the Mother Country, can be expected to flourish. But, fhould experience unfortunately difapFoint the expectations of the Founder of this fplendid Inftitution, he will yet have the fatisfaction of knowing that, under his adminiftration, the beft and nobleft means were employed and enforced, for promoting the cultivation of rational knowledge among the Servants of the Company, and thereby for fecuring the religious and civil rights of thirty millions of an ingenious and induftrious people; thofe rights hich are the inheritance of their fathers, which they themfelves confider as facred, and on which, therefore, their profperity, welfare and happiness effentially depend.
