Extremely dated and biased view of Reconstruction from a privileged white male.
"No more pathetic picture is presented than that of these four and a half million black people suddenly freed by the events of the Civil War. ... They had lived on plantations a happy, careless life, one community knowing nothing of another, and now that they had become freedmen, they still had no means of communication and no capacity to act together even if they had been able to communicate."
