[NOTE. The attraction here consisted mainly of a number of relics of Sir Walter Scott. A silver ornamental Taper-stand in a morocco and velvet case bought by Sir Walter with his first fee (£5 5s.) as an advocate and presented to his mother, realised £72 (Tregaskis), while his walking-stick, a stout ash plant from the woods at Abbotsford, with end cased in leather to prevent slipping, and silver band engraved "Walter Scott," brought £41 (Maine). An Important and Interesting series of 83 Autograph Letters, written chiefly to his brother, Thomas Scott, and to Mrs. Thomas Scott, his brother's wife, between August 21, 1807, and September 29, 1832, in a portfolio, 4to. [This Collection of Autograph Letters belonged to Mrs. Thomas Scott, widow of Sir Walter's brother; at her death they passed into the possession of her daughters, Janet (married to Lieut-Col. Huxley, Military Secretary to Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of Canada in 1819, etc.), and Anne Rutherford Scott. On the death of Miss A. R. Scott in April, 1879, the Letters and the other Scott Relics referred to in the Editor's note (supra before No. 3705), passed to the Rev. T. Scott Huxley of Canterbury (died March, 1898), who bequeathed them to his widow, the present owner. The Letters are for the most part very full, occupying mostly 3 pp. and in many cases 4 pp. of 4to. and 8vo. paper. All of them are unpublished as a whole, though parts of some have been quoted by J. G. Lockhart in his Life, and in Scott's "Familiar Letters." They relate mostly to domestic and literary matters and other things of which the following is a short résumé :-Thos. Scott's Monetary Difficultieshis Military Preferment-Proposes he should edit an edition of Shadwell for which he (Sir Walter) would obtain 100 guineas-relates the Purchase of all the old 4to. Plays of "Old Hull of Drury Lane"-"I am writing myself half blind, and Mrs. Scott managing the family and infantry." -Worried by Booksellers and Printers-Millar promises to give £120 for Shadwell's Plays, " this will be pretty picking, being all autant gagné."-The foundation of the Quarterly Review-is throwing together in two little 12mo. volumes,

a Selection of Fugitive Poetry in Order that Ballantyne may have something to start with refers to a "huge body of mutinous Villains of French Prisoners kept in a disused paper-mill at Pennecuik."-"I am glad you like the Lady of the Lake as she is rather my own favorite among my literary Offspring: 14,000 copies, value £9,000, sold in three months"-Mentions the Sale of the Rev. James Johnstone's Scandinavian Books in Dublin, some of which he purchased "at a ruinous expence "-Gives Information to his Brother of the Early History of the Isle of Man-Willingness to go to India in a situation under Dundas as Governor, in which case he "would not hesitate to pitch the Court of Session and the Booksellers to the Devil."-Is in a bad way in London as " a balance of £900 has merged in the treasury." -Mentions "Rokeby," "the publishers got rid of the full impression of 3,000 in two days after publication."— Waverley. "A Novel called Waverley has had enormous success."- Relating to the death of his brother, Major John Scott, and his property-On the claim of the War Office to a balance of £3,122 from Thos. Scott, and much other similarly interesting matter. Also Transcripts of three Letters of Sir W. Scott to Mrs. T. Scott and Walter Scott, his nephew, dated October, 1824, April, 1826, and September, 1829.-Catalogue.]

Holograph Letter of 5 pp. (closely written) with address to his brother Thomas Scott, Regimental Paymaster to the Earl of Dalhousie in Canada, dated Abbotsford, July 23, 1822, refers to the baronetcy conferred on him by George IV., praises Lockhart, speaks of his nephew Walter, with the army in Cork, etc., "I think myself well clear of London and its intrigues when I look round my green fields and recollect I have little to do but to Make my grass mow

And my apple trees grow," etc.
