This review is for: Catalogue of English Bible Translations: A Classified Bibliography of Versions and Editions Including Books, Parts, and Old and New Testament ... and Indexes in Religious Studies) (Hardcover)
Chamberlin's Catalogue of English Bible translations is the most complete bibliography of English Bible translations ever complied anywhere, any time! Importantly, it contains information about each translation, often quoting from the translation itself. Included is the publication data along with as complete as possible publication history. If the translation includes only parts of the Bible, the listing or it's numerous annotations includes the contents. The listings also often include some information about the translator. Some versions are not actually translations because they are not original, but are modifications of the King James Version, and if this it the case, this fact is noted.
This bibliographer was not judgmental about what should or should not be listed as long as it was an English or English dialect Bible translation/paraphase/revsied previous common version. This 899 page work also has a 41 page, double column comprehensive index. It contains 43 additional pages of excellent preface material, notes, etc. You will be able to determine whether your Bible is a common translation or a different translation. This work is an indispensable reference for all Bible scholars, Bible translators, Bible collectors, Bible historians, and dealers in rare books. This book can also be used in universities & seminaries for tracing the evolution of the English language.
