THE Art of Restoring; or the Piety and Probity of

General Monk, &c. 8vo. sewed, 3s.

In this pamphlet is the following epitaph :

Here lies GEORGE MONK,
Close by his punk:

He did a great thing,

Made a Duke and a King.

This truth verifies,

That whoever will rise,

Must be content to have KNAVE

Writ over his Grave.

1662

This witty production is from the admirable pen of Sir John Birkenhead. The frontispiece is deficient, otherwise the Tract would be worth 11. 1s.

16 The Bishop of Rochester's (Atterbury) Relation of the wicked Contrivances of Stephen Backhead, and Robert Young, against the Lives of several Persons, by forging an Association under their hands, &c. 800.

Atterbury's Plot was communicated by the Pretender's Agents to the Regent Duke of Orleans, and he betrayed it to George I.

17 The penitent death of John Atherton executed at Dublin 1640, by Dean Bernard 1641. Sermon at the Funeral of the said Bishop Atherton, by N. Bernard Dean of Armagh, 4to. half bound, very rare, II. Is. Dublin 1641

The Bishop was condemned for the most shameful and unnatural crime that ever was perpetrated. It is only to be equalled by a somewhat similar amour of King James 1. with a Sow, related by Dalrymple-The Bishop was unquestionably an infamous character, but there' is reason to believe that he suffered unjustly. The chief witness against him, who was afterwards hung, confessed at the gallows that he had accused Atherton unjustly.

This book is not common.

22 Bacon's Historical and Political Discourse on the Laws and Government of England, from the first times to the end of Queen Elizabeth's, fol. 15s.........1689

The design of this work, says Bishop Nicholson, is to blacken all the Kings, and to shew that all they had good in them was derived from the People. This, observes Lord Grenville (an infinitely superior authority) is an unjust account: the work contains much useful and valuable matter.

23 Bacon's History of Henry VII. fol. 10s. 6d... . . . 1622 24 Dr. Barnard's Life of Dr. Heylin, with a refutation of Baxter, front. 8vo. 6s.... ..1683
