hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. [Mark, x. 21, 23, 24, 25. He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. [Prov. xxii. 16.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. The rich and the poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. [Prov. xxii. 1, 2.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom, Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. [Prov. xxiii. 4, 5.

Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith. [Prov. xv. 16. Woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. [Luke, vi. 24-25.

He that trusteth in his riches shall fail, but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

[Prov. xi. 28. There is that maketh himself rich yet has nothing; there is that maketh himself poor yet hath great riches.

[Prov. xiii. 7.

He that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich,

[Prov. xxi. 17. He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

[Prov. xxviii. 22.

He that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. [Prov. xxviii. 20.

The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it. [Prov. X. 22.

Let the rich rejoice in that he is made low, because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man. fade away in his ways. [James, i. 10, 11. Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his

house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil. [Hab. i. 9. Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

[1 Tim. vi. 6-12, 17-19. Thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing: and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. [Rev. iii. 17.

Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. [Ps. xxxix. 6.

As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool. [Jer. xvii. 11.

The care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word. [Matth. xiii. 22.

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life And he said unto him, why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto

97 him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said, unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundred fold, and shall inherit everlasting life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. [Matth. xix. 16-30.

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip

of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

[Luke, xvi. 19-26.

Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

[James, v. 1-6.

If riches encrease set not your heart on them.

[Ps. lxii. 10. [Prov. xi. 28.

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall. For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as the eagle toward heaven.

[Prov. xxiii. 5.

RIGHTEOUSNESS.

The righteous Lord loveth righteousness; nance doth behold the upright.

his counte[Ps. xi. 7.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [Matth. v. 6.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

[Rom. x. 9, 10.

Thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous: with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

[Ps. V. 12.

ROBBERY-SABBATH.

The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death. He that trusteth in his riches shall fall but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. [Prov. xi. 18, 19, 28. The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. [Prov. x. 24, 28.

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

[Eccl. vii. 16. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. (Isai. iii. 10.

ROBBERY.

Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him; the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. [Len. xix. 13. Rob not the poor because he is poor. [Prov. xxii. 22. Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith it is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer. [Prov. xxviii. 24.

SABBATH.

On the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

[Gen. ii. 2, 3. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in
