JUDGE JOHN M. WHITE.

Judge John M. White of the Eighth Judicial Circuit died at his residence in the vicinity of Charlottesville on March 6th, 1913. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1846, he attended private schools until 1863, when he entered the Confederate Army and served in Mosby's Battalion. Entering the University in 1865 he attended that institution two years, studying law under Professor John B. Minor. While at the University he became engaged to Miss Gay E. Leake, the daughter of Hon. Shelton F. Leake, former Representative in Congress and Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. On leaving the University he married Miss Leake and began the practice of law in partnership with his distinguished father-in-law. He was appointed Commissioner in Chancery and soon developed an aptitude for the work of that office which brought to him the consideration of many of the most important and intricate cases in Albemarle. His judicial temperament and strong intellect manifested themselves very early in the many reports which he made to the court.

In 1885 he was elected County Judge of Albemarle County and held that office uninterruptedly until elected Circuit Judge under the new Constitution. He made an ideal judge: patient, courteous, dignified, calm and impartial, he earned alike the respect, admiration and affection of the lawyers who practiced before him. His main object was always to do right and to that end he gave strictest attention and most earnest effort. He grew in the duties of his office, each year exhibiting an advance in ability and experience, and with this growth the feeling came to every member of the bar in his circuit that he was a friend, ready to listen, unwilling to wound and yet absolutely impartial and striving to do even and exact justice. The great Miller School-that wonderful charitable foundation of Albemarlewas watched over by him with a zeal and care which knew no abatement.
