JUDGE ARCHER A. PHLEGAR.

Archer Allen Phiegar was born on the 22nd day of February, 1846, at Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, and died in Bristol, Virginia, on the 22nd day of December, 1912. His father, Eli Phlegar, was a lawyer of ability and reputation, and his mother was Ann E. Trigg, a lady of talent and grace. The early life of Archer Phlegar was spent in Christiansburg, where he attended the old Montgomery Male Academy until he was prepared for and entered Washington College at Lexington, Virginia. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in the fall of 1862, as a volunteer, before he was 17 years of age, joining Company "K," under the command of Capt. W. W. Brand, of the Fourth Virginia Infantry. He was soon assigned to the staff of Col. Robert C. Trigg, his uncle, as aide-de-camp. Capt. Brand recently, in writing of this soldier boy's life in the army, stated: "Never a robust man, Phlegar could stand more hard marching, and other hardships that soldiers have to endure, than any soldier I ever knew. * ** I never heard him complain, and he was always ready to respond when called upon."

He stayed with his company until the end of the war, and was endorsed by the field officers for promotion to a captaincy. After the war he returned to his home at Christiansburg, and began the study of law under Judge Waller R. Staples. He was admitted to the bar at Christiansburg in 1869. Soon after entering upon the practice of law he was elected Commonwealth's Attorney of Montgomery County. He was early regarded as a coming man at the bar, and in 1870, he formed a partnership with Major Jas. S. Taylor, who was afterwards Attorney General of the State, and the firm of Taylor & Phlegar continued until 1881. Later, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Capt. Jno. R. Johnson, which continued until 1906. He then moved to Bristol, and formed a partnership with J. Noi ment Powell, which continued until 1910, when he organized his last firm, and became associated with J. Norment Powell, John W. Price and H. H. Shelton, under the firm name of Phlegar, Powell,
