CHAPTER XXVI.

46 Everlasting punishment.] See verse 41. Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Da. xii. 2. Beside all this (said Abraham to the rich man in the parable), between us and you there is a great gulf fixed; so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us that would come from thence. Lu. xvi. 26. The hour is coming in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good unto the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation. John v. 28, 29.

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whore-mongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. Re. xxi. 8.

The righteous into life eternal.] Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Mat. xiii. 43. Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is fulness of joy, at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Ps. xvi. 10, 11. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. John iii. 15, 16. 36. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. John x. 27, 28. To them who by patient continuance in well-doing seek glory, honour, and immortality (God will render), eternal life. Ro. ii. 7. Where sin abounded grace did much more abound; that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. v. 20, 21. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our VOL. II.

Lord. Ro. vi. 23. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 1 John ii. 25. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life; and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 1 John v. 11, 12. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Jude 21.

1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings.] And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee. Mat. xix. 1.

2 Know that after two days.] After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread; and the chief priests and the Scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people. Mar. xiv. 1, 2. Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the passover; and the chief priests and Scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. And "he" ("Jesus") said unto "them" (" the disciples"), With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. Lu. xxii. 1, 2. 15. Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come, that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own, which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. John xiii. 1.

The feast of the passover.] And thus shall ye eat "it" ("the passover"), with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste; it is the Lord's passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the first-born in the land of

Egypt, both man and beast; and against all
the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment:
I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to
you for a token upon the houses where ye
are; and when I see the blood I will pass
over you, and the plague shall not be upon
you to destroy you, when I smite the land of
Egypt. And this day shall be unto you for a
memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the
Lord throughout your generations: ye shall
keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
xii. 11-14. Thou shalt not offer the blood

3 fied. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, 4 who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take

of my sacrifice with leaven, neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. Ex. xxxiv. 25. And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. John ii. 13. And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand; and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover to purify themselves. John xi. 55. Then Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. John xii. 1.

Betrayed to be crucified.] See verses 24, 25. chap. xvi. 21. I have sinned (said Judas), in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. Mat. xxvii. 4. And supper being ended, (the Devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,) Jesus riseth from supper, &c. John xiii. 2. 4. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place (the garden of Gethsemane); for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples. John xviii. 2. See chap. xvii. 12.

3 Assembled together the chief priests, &c.] And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Mat. xxi. 45, 46. Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his anointed. Ps. ii. 1, 2. They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul. Ps. lvi. 6. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked, who bend their bows that they may shoot in secret at the perfect; suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not: they encourage themselves in an evil matter, they commune of laying snares privily. Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee which frameth mischief by a law? They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. Ps. xciv. 20, 21. But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof; and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered. Je. xi. 19. Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: come, and let us Ismite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them

that contend with me. Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them. Je. xviii. 18, 19, 20. Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? For this man doeth many miracles. Then from that day forth "they" (“the chief priests and Pharisees") took counsel together for to put him to death. Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. John xi. 47. 53. 57. Lord, thou art God (said the assembly of the church), which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things! The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth, against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. Ac. iv. 24-28. See xxviii. 12.

The palace of the high priest.] See verse 58. If ye shall not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath-day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath-day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched. Je. xvii. 27. And Peter followed him (Jesus) afar off, even into the palace of the high priest, and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. Mar. xiv. 54. See xxvii. 1.

Caiaphas.] See verse 57. And one of them named Caiaphas being the high priest that same year, said unto "them" (the "chief priests and Pharisees"), ye know nothing at all; nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. John xi. 49, 50. Now Caiaphas was he which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. (Now Annas had sent him (Jesus) bound unto Caiaphas the high priest). John xviii. 13, 14. 24. And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, elders, and Scribes, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and

Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feast-day, 5 lest there be an uproar among the people. Now when Jesus was in 6 Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him 7 a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment, and

as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. Ac. iv. 5, 6.

4 Consulted that they might take.] See verse 3.

By subtilty.] Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers (said Jesus to the Scribes and Pharisees), how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Mat. xxiii. 33. Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made; and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Ge. iii. 1. The people (of Israel) grew and multiplied in Egypt, till another king arose which knew not Joseph. The same dealt subtilely with our kindred, and evil-entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. Ac. vii. 17, 18, 19, O full of all subtilty and all mischief (said Paul to Elymas the sorcerer, who was also called Bar-jesus), thou child of the Devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord. Ac. xiii. 10. I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Co.

xi. 3.

5 Not on the feast day.] Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. Ps. lxxvi. 10. There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand. Pr. xix. 21. There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. Pr. xxi. 30. I am God, and there is none like me; declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. Is. xlvi. 10. Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not. La. iii. 37. The chief priests and the Scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people. And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? All ye shall be offended because of me this night (said Jesus), for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. Mar. xiv. 2. 12. 27. Then came the day of unleavened bread when the passover must be killed. Lu. xxii. 7. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment; and it was early; and they themselves

went not into the judgment-hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover. John xviij. 28. Of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. Ac. iv. 27, 28.

Lest there be an uproar, &c.] And when he (Herod) would have put "him" (“John the Baptist") to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. Mat. xiv. 5. If we shall "say" ("that the baptism of John is") of men (said the chief priests and elders), we fear the people, for all hold John as a prophet. Mat. xxi. 26. But and if we say, Of men, all the people will stone us; for they be persuaded that John was a prophet. Lu. xx. 6.

6 In Bethany.] And "he" ("Jesus") left them, and went out of the city into Bethany, and he lodged there. Mat. xxi. 17. And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry. Mar. xi. 12. Then Jesus, six days before the passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. John xii. 1.

Simon the leper.] And being in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman, having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. Mar. xiv. 3.

7 Came unto him a woman.] "There" ("at Bethany") they made him (Jesus) a supper, and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. John xii. 2, 3.

Very precious ointment.] Take thou also unto thee (said the Lord to Moses) principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus, two hundred and fifty shekels, and of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil-olive an hin: and thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me. Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off

8 poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this 9 waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and

from his people. Ex. xxx. 23, 24, 25. 30. 33. “It” (“to dwell together in unity"), is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard, and went down to the skirts of his garments. Ps. cxxxiii. 2. Let thy garments be always white, and let thy head lack no ointment. Ec. ix. 8. Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour; so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. Ec. x. 1. Because of the savour of thy (the church's) good ointments, thy name is as ointment poured forth; therefore do the virgins love thee. While the king sitteth at his table my (the church's) ́spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof. Can. i. 3. 12. Thou (Jerusalem) wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself (by idolatry), even unto hell. Is. lvii. 9. And behold, a woman in the city (of Nain), which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus was at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. My head with oil thou didst not anoint (said Jesus to the Pharisee), but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Lu. vii. 37, 38. 46.

8 They had indignation.] And Eliab "his" ("David's ") elder brother heard when he spake unto the "men" ("who brought the challenge of Goliath"), and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart, for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 1 Sa. xvii. 28, 29. Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour this is also vanity and vexation of spirit. Ec. iv. 4. And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? Mar. xiv. 4. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. John xii. 4, 5, 6.

To what purpose is this waste.] Ye are idle, ye are idle (said Pharaoh to the officers of

the children of Israel), therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the Lord. Er. v. 17. Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, saying, When will the new-moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsify ing the balance by deceit? Am. viii. 4, 5. Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the Lord's house should be built. Then came the word of the Lord by Haggai the prophet, saying, Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste? Hag. i. 2, 3, 4. Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say The table of the Lord is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? And if ye offer the lame, and sick, is it not evil? Offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the Lord of hosts. And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us; this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the Lord of hosts. Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? Neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. Ye said also, Behold, what a weariness is it; and ye have snuffed at it, saith the Lord of hosts. And ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the Lord. 7-10. 13.

9 For this ointment, &c.] And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels' weight, then I coveted them and took them: and behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. Jos. vii. 20, 21. But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and of the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed, utterly. The people took of the spoil (said Saul), sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. Sa. xv. 9. 21. But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, the man of God, said. Be

given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, 10 Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye 11

hold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought; but as the Lord liveth I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 2 Ki. v. 20. "It" ("the ointment") might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor; and they murmured against "her" ("who anointed Jesus' feet"). Mar. xiv. 5. Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. John xii. 5, 6. These shall utterly perish in their own corruption, which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. 2 Pe. ii. 15.

unto woman?

10 Why trouble ye the woman?] Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him? Job xiii. 7. Why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. Mar. xiv. 6. And "he" ("Jesus") turned to the woman (who had anointed his feet), and said Simon (the leper), Seest thou this I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. Lu. vii. 44-50. There be some that trouble you, and would pervert the Gospel of Christ. Ga.

i. 7. I would they were even cut off which trouble you. Ga. v. 12. From henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. Ga. vi. 17.

A good work upon me.] Then I told "them" ("the Jews") of the hand of my God (said Nehemiah), which was good upon me; as also the king's (Artaxerxes') words, that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise and build: so they strengthened their hands for this good work. Ne. ii. 18. God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. 2 Co. ix. 8. We are all "his" ("God's") workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto

good works, which God hath before ordained, that we should walk in them. Ep. ii. 10. We do not cease to pray for you, that ye might walk worthy of the Lord, unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God. Col. i. 10. Now, our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting conso lation and good hope through grace, com fort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work. 2 The. ii. 16, 17. This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop he desireth a good work. 1 Ti iii. 1. Let not a widow be taken in the num ber under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, well reported of for good works. 1 Ti. v. 9, 10. If a man theres fore purge himself from "these" (" vessels to dishonour"), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Ti. ii. 21. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Tit. i. 16. The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men, teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world looking for that blessed hope, and the glo rious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Tit. ii. 11-14. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have be lieved in God might be careful to maintain good works. And let our's also learn to main tain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. Tit. iii. 1. 8.14. Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ. To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. He. xiii. 20, 21. Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul, having your conversation honest among the Gentiles, that whereas they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Pe. ii. 11, 12.

11 Ye have the poor always.] Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungred, and ye gave
