would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen 38 gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Be

you, rising early and speaking, but ye have not hearkened. And the Lord hath sent unto you all his servants, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear. They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever; and go not after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands; and I will do you no hurt. Yet ye have not hearkened unto me saith the Lord, that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hand to your own hurt. Je. xxv. 3—7. I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you, and to your fathers; but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me. Je. xxxv. 15. Thus saith the Lord (said Jeremiah to Johanan, and all the captains of the forces), the God of Israel, unto whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him, If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down; and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you. Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid. Be not afraid of him, saith the Lord; for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. And I will shew mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land. But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the Lord your God, then it shall come to pass that the sword which ye feared shall overtake you. Je. xlii. 9-13. 16. Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh! do not this abominable thing that I hate. Je. xliv. 4. Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings; but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord. Zec. i. 4.

Even as a hen gathereth her chickens.] As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings, so the Lord alone did lead him (Jacob), and there was no strange God with him. He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields, and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock. De. xxxii. 11,

12, 13. The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust (said Boaz to Ruth). Ru. ii. 12. Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings. Ps. xvi. 8. How excellent is thy loving-kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. Ps. xxxvi. 7. Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me; for my soul trusteth in thee, yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. På lvii. 1. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Ps. lxiii. 7. He shall cover thee with his feathers; and under his wings shalt thou trust. His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Ps. xci. 4.

And ye would not.] And (the king in the parable) sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding; and they would not come. Mat. xxii. 3. Because 1 have called and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; but ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof; I also will laugh at your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh; when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord: they would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. Pr. i. 24–31. Wherefore, when I came, was there no maa! When I called, was there none to answer! Is my hand shortened at all that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver! Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh because there is no water, and dieth for thirst. Is. 1. 2. As they (the prophets) called them, so they went from them; they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images. And my people are bent on backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him. Ho. xi. 2. 7. Come, for all things are now ready (said the man who made a great supper, &c.); and they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto "him" (the "servant" sent to invite the guests), I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it, I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to

prove them, I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. Lu. xiv. 17. 20. And he (the elder brother of the prodigal) was angry, and would not go in, therefore came his father out, and entreated him. Lu. XV. 28. Occupy till I come (said the nobleman in the parable to his ten servants); but his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. Lu. xix. 13, 14. If thou hadst known (said Jesus to Jerusalem), even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace; but now they are hid from thine eyes, for the day shall come upon thee that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 42, 43, 44.

38 Your house is left unto you, &c.] See ye not all these things (said Jesus)? Verily, I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another (of the buildings of the temple) that shall not be thrown down. Mat. xxiv. 2. Then will I pluck them (Israel) up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for my name will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb, and a by-word among all nations; and this house which is high shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it, so that he shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and unto this house. 2 Ch. vii. 20, 21. Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them. Ps. lxix. 24. Thy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem, a desolation. Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire, and all our pleasant things are laid waste. Wilt thou refrain thyself for these things, O Lord? Wilt thou hold thy peace, and afflict us very sore? Is. Ixiv. 10, 11, 12. Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not, and come and stand before me in this house which is called by my name, and say we are delivered to do all these abominations? Is this house which is called by my name become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord. But go ye now unto my place, which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel. And now because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising

up early and speaking, but ye heard not, and I called you, but ye answered not; therefore will I do unto this house which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh. Je. vii. 9-14. After threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself. And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city, and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. Da. ix. 26. Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour the cedar; howl, fir-tree, for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord; but lo, I will deliver the men, every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king, and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. Zec. xi. 1, 2. 6. Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee; for I will gather all nations against Jerusalem in battle, and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Zec. xiv. 1, 2. When ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not (let him that readeth understand), then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains. Mar. xiii. 14. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate; and verily I say unto you, ye shall not see me until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Lu. xiii. 35. The days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee (Jerusalem), and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 43, 44. As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. Lu. xxi. 6. 20. 24. And they (the council of the Jews) set up false witnesses which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law; for we have heard him say that this Jesus of

39 Ye shall not see me henceforth.] The children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim. Ho. iii. 4. And it was revealed unto him (Simeon) by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his armas, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Lu. ii. 26-30. All things are delivered to me of my Father, and no man knoweth who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him. And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. x. 22, 23. The days will come (said Jesus unto his disciples) when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. Lu. xvii. 22. I go my way (said Jesus), and ye shall seek me, and ye shall die in your sins; for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. I said therefore unto you, That ye shall die in your sins; for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it, and was glad. John viii. 21. 24. 56. Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father, and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also. John xiv. 9. 19.

Blessed is he that cometh.] See chap. xxi. 9. O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountains. O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength! Lift it up, be not afraid, say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God. Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom,

and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 9, 10, 11. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace, and of supplications; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shal mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. Zec. xii. 10. I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery (lest ye should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. Ro. xi. 25. But their minds (the minds of the chal dren of Israel) were blinded; for until this day remaineth the same vail (which Mos put over his face) untaken away in the reading of the Old Testament, which rail is done away in Christ; but even unto this day, wheu Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart; nevertheless, when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 2 Co. iii. 14, 15, 16.

CHAP. XXIV.-1 And departed from the temple.] See chap. 23-39. Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from ther lest I make thee desolate, a land not inhabited. Je. vi. 8. He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? ere the great abominations, that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go fat off from my sanctuary? But turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations. Ez. viii. 6. When " they" (the "cherutims in the vision") stood, "these" (" the wheels") stood; and when they were lifted up, the lifted up themselves also; for the spirit of the living creature was in them. Then the glory of the Lord departed from off the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubins. And the cherubims lifted up their wings, and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them, and every one stood at the dour of the east gate of the Lord's house; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above. Ez. x. 17, 18, 19. Then did the cherubims lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above: and the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city. Ez. xi. 22, 23. Though they bring up their children, yet will

And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I 2 There shall not be left here one stone upon another, say unto you, that shall not be thrown down. To shew him the buildings.] And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones, and what buildings are here! And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down. Mar. xiii. 1, 2. As some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down. Lu. xxi. 5, 6. Forty and six years (said the Jews to Jesus) was this temple building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? John ii. 20.

2 There shall not be left here, &c.] Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight and Israel shall be a proverb, and a bye-word among all people. And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss, and they shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and to this house? 1 Ki. ix. 7, 8. Micah, the Morasthite, prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest. Je. xxvi. 18. As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty; but they made the images of their abominations, and of their detestable things therein therefore have I set it far from them. And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil, and they shall pollute it. My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place, for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. Ez. vii. 20, 21, 22. After threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself. And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city, and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined: and he shall confirm the covenant with inany for one week; and in the midst of the week he shell cause the sac ifice and the oblation

to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined, shall be poured upon the desolate. Da. ix. 26, 27. Therefore shall Zion, for your sake, be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps; and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest. Mi. iii. 12. And (thine enemies) shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 44. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. 2 Pe. iii. 11.

3 He sat upon the mount of Olives.] And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two of his disciples (into the village over against them). Mat, xxi. 1. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, over against the temple, Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, asked him privately, Tell us when shall these things be? (the destruction of the temple, &c.) And what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? Mar. xiii. 3, 4.

The disciples came unto him privately.] And the disciples came and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Mat. xiii. 10, 11. Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. Mat. xiii. 36. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard "this saying" ("declaring what defileth a man")? Mat. xv. 12. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him (the unclean spirit) out? Mat. xvii. 19.

Tell us, when shall these things be?] And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever, that it shall be for a time times and an half. And when he shall have accomplished to

4 coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and 5 said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive

scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? Da. xii. 6, 7, 8. Master, when shall these things be? (said the disciples to Jesus). And what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? Lu. xxi. 7. Peter seeing "him" ("the disciple whom Jesus loved"), saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus said unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me! John xxi. 20, 21. It is not for you (said Jesus to his disciples) to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power. Ac. i. 7. But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 1 Th. v. 1, 2. The sign of thy coming.] See verse 32, 33. 43.

The end of the world.] The enemy that sowed "them" ("the tares") is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world, and the reapers are the angels. As, therefore, the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this world: the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from among the just. Mat. xiii. 40, 41. 49. Lo I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world: amen (said Jesus to his disciples). Mat. xxviii. 20. Now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin, by the sacrifice of himself. He. ix. 26.

4 Take heed that no man deceive you.] Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Let not your prophets, and your diviners that be in the midst of you, deceive you: neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. Je. xxix. 8. Take heed lest any man deceive you; for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many. Mar. xiii. 5, 6. For false Christs, and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. Mar. xiii. 22. Take heed that ye be not deceived; for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and the time draweth near; go ye not therefore after them.

evangelists, and some pastors and teachers. That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive. Ep. iv. 11. 14. Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Ep v. 6. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Let no man beguile you of your reward, in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind. Col. ii. 8. 18. Let no man deceive you by any means, for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition. 2 Th. ii. 3. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you; whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Pe. ii. 1, 2, 3 Beloved, believe not every spirit; but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 John iv. 1.

5 In my name, &c.] See verse 11. 24 Then the Lord said unto "me" ("Jeremiah"), The prophets prophesy lies in my name, I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Je. xiv. 14. I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran; I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied; I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. Je. xxiii. 21. 25. I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John v. 43. Before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men. about four hundred, joined themselves, who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered and brought to nought.
