CHAP. XXI.—1 When they drew nigh, &c.] And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples. Mar. xi. 1. And when he had "thus" spoken, ("the parable of the nobleman who left his money with his servants") he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. And it came to pass when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany in the mount, called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples. Lu. xix. 28, 29.

The mount of Olives.] And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us when shall these things (the coming of the Son of man, &c.) be? Mat. xxiv. 3. And when they had sung an hymn (after the institution of the Lord's Supper), they went out into the mount of Olives. Mat. xxvi. 30. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof, toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. Zec. xiv. 4. And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to rejoice, and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen. Lu. xix. 37. And in the day-time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. Lu. xxi. 37. Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. John viii. 1. Then (when a cloud had received Jesus out of the Apostles' sight) returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath-day's journey. Ac. i. 12.

2 Gointo the village, &c.] Go into the city to such a man (said Jesus before the last Supper), and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand, I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples. Mat. xxvi. 18. Go your way into the village, over against you, and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him and bring him. And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him, and straightway he

will send him hither. Mar. xi. 2, 3. Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water, follow him; and wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the good man of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? And he will shew you a large upper room, furnished and prepared, there make ready for us. And his disciples went forth and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Passover. Mar. xiv. 13–16. Go ye into the village over against you, in the which at your entering you shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat; loose him and bring him hither. And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. Lu. xix. 30, 31, 32. His (Jesus) mother saith unto the servants (at the marriage in Cana of Galilee), Whatsoever he saith unto you do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins a piece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water; and they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear to the governor of the feast. And they bare it. John ii. 5-8.

3 The Lord hath need of them.] Who am I (said David), and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee; for we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own. 1 Ch. xxix. 14, 15, 16. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. Ps. xxiv. 1. Every beast of the forest is mine (saith God), and the cattle upon a thousand hills; I know all the fowls of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are mine. Ps. 1. 10, 11. The silver is mine and the gold is mine, saith the Lord of hosts; the glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the Lord

way he will send them. All this was done, that it might be 4 fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the 5 daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and

of hosts, and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts. Hag. ii. 8, 9. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John iii. 35. Glorify thy Son (said Jesus to the Father), that thy Son also may glorify thee, as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John xvii. 1, 2. God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands, neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all, life, and breath, and all things. Ac. xvii. 24, 25. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 2 Co. viii. 9.

And straightway he will send them.] And Saul also went home to Gibeah, and there went with him a band of men whose hearts God had touched (to choose him king). I Sa. x. 26. Arise (said the word of the Lord to Elijah), get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. 1 Ki. xvii. 9. In the first year of Cyrus, King of Persia, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, that he made a proclamation, saying, he (God) hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Then rose up the * chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. Ezr. i. 1. 5. Blessed be the Lord God of our Fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. Ear. vii. 27. Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia, how that in a 'great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 2 Co. viii. 1, 2. Thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. 2 Co. viii. 16. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. i. 17.

4 This was done.] See chap. i. 22. All this was done (Christ being betrayed, &c.) that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. Mat. xxvi. 56. These things were done (the soldiers not breaking Jesus' legs) that

the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. John xix. 36, 37. Zec. xii. 10. Ex. xii. 46. Nu. ix. 12. Saying.] Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. Zec. ix. 9. Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. John xii. 15.

5 The daughter of Sion, &c.] That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion (have mercy upon me, O Lord): I will rejoice in thy salvation. Ps. ix. 14. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion; for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee. Is. xii. 6. O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain. O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Is. xl. 9. Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. Is. lxii. 11. Sing O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the King of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more. Zep. iii. 14, 15. They (the disciples) went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded; and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. And many spread their garments in the way; and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna! Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. Mar. xi. 4-10.

6 sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the dis

city. Nu. xxiv. 19. I will declare the decree the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now, therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Ps. ii. 7-12. My heart is inditing of a good matter, I speak of the things which I have made touching the king. Thou art fairer than the children of men; grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty. And in thy majesty ride prosperously; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations; therefore shall the people praise thee for ever. Ps. xlv. 1-4. 6, 7. 17. Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son. He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment. In his days shall the righteous flourish. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea all kings shall fall down before him, all nations shall serve him. He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight. His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun, and men shall be blessed in him; all nations shall call him blessed and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen. Ps. lxxii. 1-19. The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion; rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The Lord hath sworn and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Ps. cx. 1-4. In his days (of the righteous Branch) Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely and this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord ourRighteousness. Jer. xxiii. 6. I the Lord will be their

God (of his flock), and my servant David a prince among them: I the Lord have spoken it. Ez. xxxiv. 24. David my servant shall be king over them, and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. Ez. xxxvii. 24. In the days of these kings (shadowed in Nebuchadnezzar's dream) shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms: and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest (said Daniel) that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces, the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known unto the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof

sure.

Da. ii. 44, 45. I saw in the night visions (said Daniel), and behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away; and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. Da. vii. 13, 14. Thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Mi. v. 2. Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold, the man whose name is the Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord: even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne and he shall be a priest upon his throne and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. Zec. vi. 12, 13. Pilate saith unto "them" ("the Jews"), Shall I crucify your king? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Cesar. And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross: and the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not the King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. John xix. 15–22.

Meek.] See chap. ii. 29; xii. 19, 20, Let nothing be done through strife, or vain-glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Phi. ii. 3, 4.

And a very great multitude spread their garments in the 8 way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that fol- 9 lowed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is

And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on, &c. &c. 2 Sa. xvi. 2. The king (David) also said unto them (Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the Son of Jehoiada), Take with you the servants of your Lord, and cause Solomon, my son, to ride upon mine own mule; and bring » him down to Gihon. 1 Ki. i. 33. And they brought every man his present (to Solomon), vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year: and Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen. 1 Ki. x. 25, 26. I will have mercy upon the House of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God; and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen. Ho. i. 7. These things (which were written by Zechariah, saying, Behold thy King cometh sitting on an ass's colt) understood not his disciples at the first; but, when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. The people, therefore, that was with him, when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. For this cause the people also met him; for that they heard that he had done this miracle. The Pharisees, therefore, said among them selves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? 11 This is Jesus the prophet, &c.] See chap. xvi. 13, 14. The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken. And the Lord said unto me (said Moses), They have well spoken that which they have spoken; I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words into his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I command him. Jesus sa Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile. John i. 45, 46, 47. Those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did (feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fishes), said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. John vi. 14.
