Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and Scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far 22 from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and 23

63. Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. John ii. 19, 20, 21. Him (Jesus), being delivered by the determinate counsel and fore-knowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain (said Peter on the day of Pentecost): whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved; therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope, because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Therefore (David), being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; he seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Ac. ii. 23–32.

of his decease, which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. Let these sayings sink down into your ears, for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men; but they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not; and they feared to ask him of that saying. Lu. ix. 22. 30, 31. 44, 45. Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that were written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished; for he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: and they shall scourge him, and put him to death, and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things; and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. Lu. xviii. 31-34. He is not here, but risen (said the angels to the women at the sepulchre). Remember how he spake unto you, when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. Ought not Christ to have suffered (said Jesus to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus) these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. Thus it is written (said Jesus to the eleven), and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. Lu. xxiv. 6, 7. 26, 27. 46. I delivered unto you, first of all, that which I also received; how that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures. 1 Co. xv. 3, 4. See chap. xvii.

Chief priests and Scribes.] While he (Jesus) yet spake (saying, He is at hand that doth betray me), lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Mat. xxvi. 47. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. Mat. xxvii. 12. Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron, &c. (by lot into four and twenty orders, &c.) 1 Chr. xxiv. 1, &c. Now these are the chief of the priests that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua, &c. (two and twenty in number). Ne. xii. 7.

And be raised again the third day.] See chap. xxvii. 63. Sir (said the chief priests and Pharisees to Pilate), we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Mat. xxvii.

22 Began to rebuke him.] See verses 16,

17. Behold, one of them (his disciples) which were with Jesus, stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place, for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? Mat. xxvi. 51, 52, 53. Peter took him (Jesus), and began to rebuke him. Mar. viii. 32. Peter said unto "him" ("Jesus"), Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. John xiii. 6, 7, 8. See chap. xix. 13.

Be it far from thee.] The messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king (Ahab) with one mouth (of his going against Ramoth Gilead): let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good. 1 Ki. xxii. 13. When "he" ("Agabus") was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and

said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but 24 those that be of men. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his

bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost; So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and break mine heart? for I am ready, not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. Ac. xxi. 11, 12, 13.

23 Get thee behind me.] See chap. iv. 10. Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden, but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die! For God doth know, that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. And unto Adam "" "he" ("God") said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. Ge. iii. 1-6. 17. When he (Jesus) had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan, for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Mar. viii. 33. Get thee behind me, Satan (said Jesus to the Devil in the wilderness), for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Lu. iv. 8. Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light: therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works. 2 Co. xi. 14, 15.

Satan.] And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should be adversaries unto me? Shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? For do not I know that I am this day king over Israel? 2 Sa. xix. 22. Satan stood up

against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Chr. xxi. 1. He shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee. Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zec. iii. 1, 2. Jesus answered "then" ("his disciples"), Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? John vi, 70.

Thou art an offence.] Woe unto the world, because of offences; for it must needs be that offences come. But woe to that man by whom the offence cometh. Mat. xviii. 7. "He" ("Christ") shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel; for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Is. viii. 14. Let us not judge one another any more; but judge this raiber, that no man put a stumbling-block, or an occasion to fall, in his brother's way. It i good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Ro. xiv. 13. 21.

Thou savourest not the things.] Thou (Pe ter) savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Mar. viii. 33. They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit, the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace: because the carnal mind is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither can be. So then, they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Ro. viii. 5-8. The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 1 Co. ii. 14, 15. Many walk, of whom I have told you, whose end is destruetion, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. Phi. iii. 19. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Col. iii. 2.

24 If any man will come after me.] See chap. x. 38. For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? For whosoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, of him shall the bon of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there

cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: 25 and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what 26 is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For 27 the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his

be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 25-27. We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 22. I Paul rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church. Col. i. 24. No man should be moved by these afflictions, for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto. 1 Th. iii. 3. All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Ti. iii. 12. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. He. xi. 24-26.

And take up his cross.] As they came out (leading Christ away to crucify him), they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. Mat. xxvii. 32. They compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. Mar. xv. 21. And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jes us. Lu. xxiii. 26. He (Jesus) bearing his cross, went forth into a place called the place of a Scull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha. John xix. 17. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh, hath ceased from sin; that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 1 Pe. iv. 1, 2.

25 Whosoever will save his life.] See chap. x. 39. If thou (said Mordecai to Esther) holdest thy peace at this time (when the Jews are about to be extirpated), then shall their enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer, Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise, and so will I go in unto the king (Ahasuerus), which

is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish. Es. iv. 14, 15, 16. I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there; save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying, That bonds and afflictions abide me. Ac. xx. 22, 23. And they (Michael and his angels) overcame him (the dragon) by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death. Re. xii. 11. See chap. xix. 29.

26 What is a man profited, &c.] See chap. v. 29. Satan answered the Lord and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. Job ii. 4. What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul. Mar. viii. 36. What is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself, or be cast away? Lu. ix. 25.

Gain the whole world.] See chap. iv. 8, 9. What is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? Job xxvii. 8. Thou fool (said God to the rich man in the parable), this night thy soul shall be required of thee, then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? Lu. xii. 20. Abraham said (to the rich man being in torments), Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Lu. xvi. 25.

Or what shall a man give in exchange, &c.] None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, (for the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever). Ps. xlix. 7, 8. What shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Mar. viii. 37.

27 The Son of man shall come.] See chap. xxvi. 64. Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. Mat. xxiv. 30. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory. Mat. xxv. 31. Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mat. xxvi. 64. Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Mar. viii. 38. Jesus said, I am (the Christ), and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mar. xiv. 62. Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of

angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his 28 works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. Lu. ix. 26. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud, with power, and great glory. Lu. xxi. 27. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Lu. xxii. 69. See chap. xix. 28; xxiv. 30; xxv. 31.

With his angels.] See chap. xiii. 41. 49. And a fiery stream issued and came forth from before "him" (" the Ancient of days"), thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Da. vii. 10. The Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Zec. xiv. 5. To you who are troubled (God will recompense) rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. 2 The. i. 7-10. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of "these" ("false teachers"), saying, Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints to execute judgment upon all, &c. Jude 14.

And then he shall reward, &c.] See chap. x. 41, 42. The work of man shall he (the Lord) render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. Job xxxiv. 11. Unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy, for thou renderest to every man according to his work. Ps. lxii. 12. He that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his works. Pr. xxiv. 12. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for the reward of his hands shall be given him. Is. iii. 10, 11. I, the Lord, search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Je. xvii. 10. The Great, the mighty God, the Lord of Hosts is his name; great in council, and mighty in work; for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. Je. xxxii. 19. The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the

people of the land shall be troubled; I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them, and they shall know that I am the Lord. Ez. vii. 27. (God), who will render to every man accord ing to his deeds. Ro. ii. 6. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labour. 1 Co. iii. 8. We must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 2 Co. v. 10. Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. Ep. vi. 8. If ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons, judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. I Pe. i. 17. I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts, and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. Re. ii. 23. Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be; I am Alpha, and Omega, the beginning and the end; the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city; for without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whore mongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Re. xxii. 12–15.

28 There be some standing here.] Verily I say unto you, that there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. Mar. ix. 1. I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 27.

Taste of death.] Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Ghost was upon him. Lu. ii. 25. Now we know that thou hast a devil (said the Jews to Jesus); Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death! John viii. 52 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. H ii. 9. See chap. x. 23. Hereafter, shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven

Then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh. Lu. xxi. 27, 28.

CHAP. XVII.-1 After six days.] After six days, Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves and he was transfigured before them. Mar. ix. 2.

It came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter, and John, and James, and went up into a mountain to pray! And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. Lu. ix. 28, 29.

Peter, James, and John.] And "he" ("Jesus") took with him (unto a place called Gethsemane) Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Mat. xxvi. 37. And "he" ("Jesus") suffered no man to follow him (to the Ruler of the Synagogue's house), save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. Mar. IV. 37.

When he came into the (Ruler's) house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. Lu. viii. 51. 1 This is the third time I am coming to you (said Paul); in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. 2 Co. xiii. 1.

An high mountain apart.] This voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Pe. i. 18.

2 Transfigured before them.] And as he (Jesus) prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. Lu. ix. 29. Be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Ro. xii. 2. (Christ) who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Phi. ii. 6, 7.

His face did shine as the sun.] His (the angel's) countenance (who rolled the stone from VOL. II.

the door of the sepulchre) was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. Mat. xxviii. 3. And it came to pass when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while He talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come nigh him and Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the Rulers of the congregation returned unto him and Moses talked with them. And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. But when Moses went before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off until he came out. And he came out and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses" face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again until he went in to speak with him. Ex. xxxiv. 29-35. The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. John i. 14. Father, I will (said Jesus) that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me; for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. John xvii. 24. At mid-day, O king, (said Paul to Agrippa), I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou Lord? and he said, I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest. Ac. xxvi. 13, 14, 15. In the midst of the seven candlesticks (I saw) one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle; his head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were as a flame of fire, and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace, and his voice as the sound of many waters; and he had in his right hand seven stars, and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword; and his countenance was as
